how to work away smudge and add detail lines from Autodesk 3ds Max render

Participant ,

Hello everybody!

I have been using Photoshop for a whole day now. And have set up my first picture.

I insert all kinds of rendered images in one bigger collage.

But now i have a question. The final rendered image has some smudge/ distortion on it.

NMPDI_0-1725449353574.png

Now what would be the best way to nicely work that away and let it blend in with the rest of the surrounding white colors?

And a bonus question.

Another part of my image did not render a black line, where there should be one...

Would you all suggest using a brush tool for this? And would that be a straight line? Or is there a better looking option.

Thanks already!

Hi @NM MSDK

If Photoshop works for you with the lines, then keep it in Photoshop. Since you are getting 20+ layers for the lines you are most likely using the Shape mode, so the lines can be edited. You might select those Line layers and put them into one group (folder at the bottom of the layers panel) for management purposes.

Make sure you view at 100% to check for problems with faint lines. You can also use a Levels adjustment layer, move the black slider way to the right, this will show you stray pixels and noise in the white areas. If a line is missing you'll have to draw one in. You can use the clone and dodge tools to clean up blurred spots.

Really this is work that is better handled in Illustrator, where you have vector shapes instead of rendered pixels.

I might get the funds to do that and get Illustrator in the future, but as of now the finance office will not give me another 400 euro's to buy another editing app when just one day ago they finally gave me green light to get photoshop, after many weeks of only having a free software...

I am the only one working with Ps/3ds max and all these other apps just for visualization. And the company is kind of skeptical for its long time implementation so they wont let me spend 1000's of euro's on something experimental. So now ill have make the best of photoshop for the next few weeks.

You can't buy Illustrator for a fixed sum. It is subscription-only, like Photoshop.

You could look at an app like Inkscape for the line drawings.

I know how online licencing works, point is the licencing budget got spent on Photoshop, so ill have to make the best of it.

Hi @NM MSDK ,

I think you can use the clone stamp tool to help replace the areas with smudging, use a small brush with a mostly hard edge in your brush settings to stamp over each element at a time. That should give you a solid fix.

Retouch images with the Clone Stamp tool (adobe.com)

As for that Line, you can use the line tool. I think that will match your vector like picture best.

Work with the line tool (adobe.com)

Feel free to reply with help in using these tools one you give them a try. Others may chime in with other options as well!

Hi, i have been working on it.

But, to be honest it was quite a struggle. The Clone stamp picked up lots of bits i did not want there so after a while of failure i did it with a brush and dropper tool.

The lines worked better, but after a bit of inspection it turned out that i needed quite a few more, but then i ended up with 20+ layers only consisting of lines, now i did merge them but when merged with the layer my picture is on the whole layer got a strange look so i have them seperated.

But now the next problem emerged with the brush tool, when painting in detail's (brush size <5 px) i noticed it created strange "light" colors, wich i had not selected, but every color was way too light until i went over them up to 4 times.

All my settings are at max so i dont know why this happens.

Anyway, your a great help Chris!

@NM MSDK

It seems like the real question should be: why is 3ds Max introducing smudges and not including some lines? Is there anything you can do there to avoid the issue from occurring in the first place?

In Photoshop, have you tried the new-ish Remove tool for the smudges?

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/tool-techniques/remove-tool.html

For drawing back in lines that have disappeared, you might look for a free or low-cost vector editor. We have been asked not to recommend any non-Adobe apps, but you can do a Google search.

Thanks for the reply Jane!

The problem why i have a little bit of smudge and it is not showing a few lines is because i am rendering a large white assembly, on a white background, under a strange angle with a ton of shaders underneat it (because officially 3ds max does not support lines).

And if i delve in the settings a bit more i could get is sorted out maybe, but i taught that it would be faster to edit those out in a superb editing probram (photoshop) then to delve into settings for hours on end.

But coming back to the latter part of your message, you would recommend not to use photoshop for these editing problems?

Thanks for your response!
