Huge VRAM Usage - Camera Raw

Hello,

After I replaced my GPU from 1050 Ti to 4070, I expected an improvement in performance, but instead got crashes, out of video memory errors. I'm on the latest drivers, tried to reinstall both Studio and Game-ready Drivers and the issue still happens.

Does anyone know the solution?

I'm using the latest stable Photoshop and Camera Raw.

I'll add my other two cents what improved my experience hugely in Adobe Bridge in conjunction with ACR:

Go to the NVIDIA-Control-Panel (right klick on your Desktop), then

--> 3D-Settings

--> Manage 3D-Settings

--> Either under the Global-tab or set it up specifically for Adobe Bridge

--> Cuda - Sysmem Fallback Policy:          Change this to Prefer Sysmem Fallback

As far as my understanding goes, ACR / Bridge won't touch the system RAM in certain circumstances and for certain calculations. This set

Hi @Yaros1 Go to Photoshop Help Menu/System Info and copy/paste details in a reply. Post only once as the system takes time to process the large amount of data.

I think that GPU is only a month old right? My guess is that the drivers, even the latest ones, are not mature / stable for every use case. That, or photoshop itself will improve compatibility with the latest cards in future versions.

You can try going to performance, advanced GPU settings, and unchecking "use openCL". Or checking it, if it's already unchecked.

This is a shot in the dark, but in the past when I had brand new hardware and maybe the software (games) weren't really made with that hardware in mind... I was able to resolve problems by underclocking, e.g. I ran my memory at less than the max advertised speed, and solved all my stability problems. You can try the same with your GPU, doesn't cost anything and you can always undo the change if it doesn't help. <Moderator link removed>

@CreeDorofl a lot of times its a conflict with an integrated underpowered GPU conflicting with the main unit. Gathering the system details gives us a complete picture before we start guessing.

Hi @Yaros1 change your Photoshop RAM usage back to 70%. Setting it as high as 90% means if PS cannot access 90% of your RAM, it will work against you.

Also confirm you are using the Studio drivers, not Game-Ready.

Hi, have the same problem (I think) and a fix-ish. Any time using Adobe Camera RAW (zooming in, changing exposure, especially using the AI Denoise - in Bridge or Photoshop) the VRAM will fill up in chunks. Some of it is cleared when closing ACR but some remains.

Try deactivating something in ACR: First klick the blue text information in ACR below the picture with the [color profile, bit-depth, resolution, file-size and ppi] to access ACR preferences. Then Performance > Performance > Use Graphics Processor: Custom > DEACTIVATE: Use GPU for image processing (Process Version 5 or higher). Performance takes a small hit for me, but is much better than having the VRAM filled to the brim with a horrendously sluggish Photoshop / Bridge / whole PC.

This solved (or rather improved) for me the steady build-up of VRAM-usage while zooming and changing settings. It didn't however solve the persistent memory usage after using AI Denoise. A restart of Bridge will handle this.

IMHO this is a problem that needs to be addressed by Adobe to fully resolve.

If it helps: I'm using a 12th gen i7 Intel CPU, 64 GB of RAM and a Nvidia 3060 ti (8 GB VRAM) on Windows 10 with the latest drivers (studio) and fully updated Adobe products.

I'll add my other two cents what improved my experience hugely in Adobe Bridge in conjunction with ACR:

Go to the NVIDIA-Control-Panel (right klick on your Desktop), then

--> 3D-Settings

--> Manage 3D-Settings

This setting allows your graphics card to off-load files stored in VRAM to go to RAM. It will be somewhat slower in some cases, but at least my PC now keeps on functioning even with VRAM filled to the brim.

Still, RAM will keep on climbing over time and force a restart of Bridge eventually.

Sorry, I'm afraid this doesn't work as well as I thought it did. The only fix I've found is to click on the text at th bottom of ACR, go to 'performance' and clear the cache, this fixes it instantly for me, doesn't last long though.

This worked for me, I have RTX4070 with 8GB that was maxing out after working on 2 images. Deactivated use GPU for anything and watched in Task Manager, using hardly any GPU Ram but more of my 32GB 5600 (I think) Ram, it's also processing faster in ACR now.

Thanks!

Just to clarify, I didn't change any settings in NVidia control panel, only deactivated use GPU in ACR, 3 days later and still running okay and also faster.

Addition: Anything AI will instantly put a huge chunk of data into VRAM for me (like "Select Sky" or the like) which will stay there persistently until Bridge (after using ACR) is closed.

  • Photoshop and locate the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file:
    • (macOS) /Users/[user name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/GPU/Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw/Camera Raw GPU Config.txt
    • (Windows) \Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\GPU\Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw\Camera Raw GPU Config.txt

The user Library folder is hidden by default in macOS X 10.7 and later releases.  Manually delete the Camera Raw GPU Config.txt file and relaunch Photoshop.
