I have searched and almost found the answer. File - script - Image processor - Select folder - resize to fit, BUT I can't see the option to save as png (as you can see from my screenshot. (Using photoshop CC 2017)

Put your images into a common folder.
Create a new custom Action.
Create actions in Adobe Photoshop
Go to File > Open an image.
Hit Stop button on Actions panel.
You can now batch process images with your custom action by going to File > Automate > Batch. Select your image folder and the Action name.

it's not exactly a very "specific" wish. exporting to PNG seems like a very very basic function.

What problems do you have with the task?
Please provide a meaningful description and screenshots to illustrate.

surely we just want an explanation as to WHY there isn't an easy "batch process" for exporting to PNG. if there's a good reason then fine, we'll go the long way round, but when should a company ask its customers to learn how to do their work? would a restaurant ask a customer to cook their own food if they ask for something 'specific'?

Plenty of Photoshop users seem to create pngs just fine so what is your actual poblem with exporting pngs?
How do the »plain« automation options (Actions, Batch, …) fail you in your specific task?
Have you tried a »slightly« advanced one (Scripts for example) yet?
Have you tried Image Processor Pro?

i have no problem creating PNGs. but for some reason it seems impossible to create an Action to Quick Export as PNG. i haven't spent hours searching for solutions. found this thread. tried some of the solutions. none of which work. i honestly don't have time to dig deeper into it and just ended up manually exporting each file - only 120 so not a miserable half hour 😉 . but following this thread it seems that no one else has found an easy way to create a quick batch export to PNG (Scripts only does batch actions for JPG, PSD or TIFF formats).

Could you please explain what you have actually had to do already?
120 pngs from 120 layered images, 120pngs for variations of a smaller number of files, …?
Again: Have you tried Image Processor Pro?

haven't tried Image Processor Pro. but my point here isn't about an alternative solution...i'm just curious why the feature isn't just there in the basic dropdown menus. it shouldn't matter what type of file format i'm batch exporting (tho for the record i batch processed about 120 images to all be exact same aspect, resolution, color space etc so they were all identical mathematically).

You really should, although a 3rd party add-on, one could argue that it should be licensed by Adobe as a shipping "native" feature.

again, can someone explain WHY Adobe hasn't just added this very simple option to the batch actions?
By @marlowef54905319
The Batch command was the first form of automation. It's a solution to bulk run an action over multiple files. As such, it is up to the end user to create the action. This isn't an "out of the box" solution.
If you are talking about the default Image Processor script that ships with Photoshop, then only Adobe can answer why they didn't add PNG to the original code. Today, users may as well ask "Why not add WebP?" or some other format.
What is noticeable is that the Image Processor script is fast running out of vertical space and that it may not have fit common monitor resolutions from back in the day. This is only speculation.
Compare the standard Image Processor script:
To the extended script from the late Mike Hale, which adds PNG:
This isn't that much deeper than the original, however, it's obvious that laying things out vertically in a fixed series of file formats has limitations.

I actually would ask, "Why not add WebP, as well as other formats?" Affinity Photo didn't seem to have any problem doing that in their software, despite and vertical space restrictions.

And as you don’t actually lay out how Photoshop’s features failed you when others are able to batch-create pngs it seems unclear whether there is a »why« on Adobe’s side.
Edit:
Sorry, I have to correct my previous statement:
You appear to be talking about the lack of a specific menu item for (batch) exporting pngs, not the principal capability to batch crate pngs.
In that case I wonder how many more menu items you would want there to be and how those would influence the default user experience.

I will step in here. The built-in functionality of Photoshop's batch processing is outdated. We should be able to batch process any file format that PS can open to any other file format that it can export. The batch image processing features have not been updated in years. Meanwhile, Adobe is adding all kinds of AI and 3D features that the majority of users have requested they add. And also, meanwhile, we are paying a monthly subscription fee for features that we will never use and not having the feature that we truly need. This is a reason why people are leaving Adobe for Affinity. So, yes, we can add a script that a 3rd party developer has written, but should we really have to? What if that developer decides they don't want to update it anymore?

A third party has adapted and updated Image Processor here:

It offers PNG and despite the name, isn't for raw camera files.

Feature Requests (Idea) and Bug Reports are registered at Adobe, otherwise this is essentially a user Forum, though thankfully some Adobe employees do occasionally chime in.
You are basically just talking to other Photoshop users.
And Adobe employees are naturally subject to NDAs.
So it would be kind-of a »Those that know don’t say, those that say don’t know«-situation.

The volunteers on this forum do not work for Adobe and cannot answer the "why" questions. This thread began in 2018. You might start a new post and select Ideas instead of Discussions to post a Feature Request. Use the format described in this thread:
