In Photoshop: I open a photo and duplicate it. Adjust Saturation in HSL adjustment layer to say 75 (yes very high but really want to see what's happening). On duplicate I addjust Saturation (not vibrance) in Vibrance adjustment layer to same, 75, amount. The photos are very different.
Why?
See attached photo.
Minor differences are expected at high intensities due to math, layer stacking, and the way Photoshop blends/apply these adjustments.

Different algorithms, created decades apart, by different developers.

Thank you Stephen,
I can understand what you write creates different results in the two tools - just wish there somewhere was written how I as a user can benefit from the two for different pictures. Yes, I can try the two on several pictures (which I have done) and see for myself but I sometimes want more from the more knowledgeable (is that a word?)

Yes, I understand that there will be differences but the tools are named the same but on different locations. I wish they would have been named differently (since they are different from eachother). So, there are (at least) 3 saturationtools in photoshop: Vibrance (mild if I may call it that), Saturation in Vibrance Adjlayer (wich is stronger) and saturation in HSL-adjlayer (which is the strongest).

Hi!
Here is some additional information (in non-technical terms) regarding the differences between Saturation and Vibrance. Saturation will take all colors and apply the same amount of saturation across the board. Everything becomes more (or less) saturated evenly.
Vbrance increases the saturation in the colors that are lesst saturated making them more vibrant, but leaves the more saturated colors alone—thus the different algorythms that Stephen is talking about.
That is why you get two very different—and intentionally different—results.
Hope that helps to answer your question!
Michelle

Thank you Michelle, I am fully aware of the difference between Vibrance and Saturation. I was wondering about the diffeence between Saturation (in the HSL-Adjlayer) and Saturation (in the Vibrance-Adjlayer).

Thank you all for taking time to answer.
I found this video that tries to explain and show the difference between the two saturation adjustmentsliders:

Sorry all, I have no idea why the video was inserted so many times. Sorry.
