There's a million ways to do this, but yes, a color overlay in Multiply mode is one.

 

Another is a Levels layer where you drag down the output white point in one or more channels (here mostly the red channel). That's probably even quicker and more easily controlled.

Another alternative is a gradient adjustment layer, in which you choose the gradient that will replace the brightness levels in the image.
