Ps & Br user since the beginning of time. Then came ACR, loved it at first sight. Then (c. 2020) came Ps versions with more and more useful ACR features, and a more nice seamless logic between the three. Great. Even with an 8GB machine you could do good work. And if you overdid it, Windows would just go slow. You wouldn't lose work.

And then came the new versions. Many bugs, more bugs, both with Ps and Br. Broken "seamlessness" and a lot of memory leaks. Programs would freeze or crash, not slow down. Out of memory errors, even with 24GB RAM. PC after PC, always well setup systems, but always similar problems. It is so tiresome now. I mean, I now usually open Ps/Br 2022 (even 2021!) to be somewhat confident that I will do my work without losing it.

Please post the entire Help > System Info from Photoshop. Maybe we can give you some pointers.

The problems you describe are usually hardware related, particularly GPU and/or scratch disk. A very common issue is conflicting dual GPUs in laptops.

Thank you D Fosse. Info below. Although my remarks are the sum of experiences with Ps/Br/Acr for the last 3-4 years, over all these latest versions and between 4-5 different Windows systems. All of which btw were well set up, lots of RAM, windows pagefile on seperate SSD, Ps scratchdisk and Br cache on other seperate SSD etc.

Attached just a typical sample of ACR memory leak. Not often, not seldom too. Today I had a new first: Ps started messing up its interface, then seemed stuck. Just 3 files open. After a while Ctrl-W worked in blind, and saved my files. And after a while Alt-F4 finally closed it. But it never released its RAM!

OK, I can't see anything off in your system info - but I can't see any memory leak either?

Are you saying that memory is not released when you close Photoshop? That's not normal. What is normal, is that Photoshop holds the allocated memory as long as it's running, and it will not be released when closing files. This is by design, as constantly requesting memory from the operating system would make things like batch processing unworkable. The memory will be reused and recycled.

It's perfectly normal that total memory use holds steady at 90-95 % as you work. Memory is there to be used. Free memory is wasted memory.

A memory leak, however, is when it keeps rising uncontrollably until it hits 100%, without any particular action.

Also keep in mind that ACR runs outside Photoshop's address space and needs its own memory separate from Photoshop.

As general troubleshooting, I'd start by resetting preferences. Corrupt preferences can cause weird and unexpected behavior. Preferences are prone to corruption because they are rewritten on every application exit. Irregular shutdowns can corrupt them, and errors can accumulate.

Also make sure you are using the Studio driver for the RTX 3050, not the Game Ready driver. The latter can cause problems in Photoshop and is not recommended.

Thank you again for your interest. I am an old computer person (plus IT professional) and photographer. My systems are kept quite tight.

As I mentioned, it's not a particular bug that bothers me now. It's the cummulative tiring experience of the past few years/versions. I have posted in the community two or three times problems of mine, but the general experience is the important thing: Very deteriorating. Ok, lately RAM issues, but that's just lately.

Bottomline is that NOT rarely, work is lost. With no obvious cause, system fault etc. This time I attach an instance where all programs were closed (Ps, Br, Acr), doublechecked that they are not alive in details of task manager, and memory forever committed...

I agree that doesn't look normal if the applications are closed. I've never seen that. But if all PS/ACR/Bridge processes are terminated and no instance can be seen in Task Manager, then this is a system problem. I'd look at the GPU driver first.

It's been a while... Still furious! Just a couple of files open in ACR, 8-10GB of free RAM still...
And of course I'll get an out-of-memory error, just for making one change in color balance.
It's weird, like color balance is different than other edits. Happened 3 times today.
One of them caused the system to black out the screen -- had to hard reset. Losing everything of course.

OK. Are you using the studio driver or the game ready driver? The latter frequently causes problems. Do you see the same problems with different/updated driver versions?

This really has GPU written all over it, but I can't see any immediately obvious problems.

Another thing, have you tried to reset preferences at any time, or do you migrate preferences from one version to the next? The preferences file contains much more than user settings, it's the whole application configuration, including many hidden settings related to the system.

Only studio driver, always last version. These past 1-2 with the same problem (actually various problems/bugs, but this is by far the worst). Indeed it has GPU written all over, but to make it more interesting, same thing with the previous graphics card too.

All I can say at this point is that there are quite a few reports of this, on Windows and Mac alike. Platform doesn't seem to matter. So that does indeed point to something in Photoshop.

But here's the good news: several of these users have reported back that a clean install and clean preferences fixed it. In short, a complete nuke. Clean preferences means moving the whole Settings folder out, not just clicking the button to reset. And one updated to a new version, which amounts to the same thing if you don't migrate preferences.

The rest haven't come back as far as I can tell, so we don't know if they tried that or if they did, whether it fixed the problem.

My money is on preferences. Corrupt preferences can often cause weird behavior that looks like an application bug.
