Layer Mask "stuck". Can't click on it.

Hello, I am having an issue with the latest version of Photoshop CC. After the program has been open for a short while, the layer mask button will be "stuck" in the clicked position and I have to save and close my document, as well as shut the program down to get it to "unstick". Very strange. I've tried everything to get it to change but it won't no matter what I do. Just thought you'd want to know about this issue and see if there are any workarounds. It is getting pretty annoying.

What you do mean the button is stuck? Can you share a screen shot?

I was trying to add a layer mask on one of the layers but the mask button is already "pressed" and it won't do anything. I have to save and close the program to get it to work when I reopen it. This screenshot doesn't show it because it is now working (for now). But it will happen again. I circled the button in red in the bottom right corner.

It is happening again this morning. Here is a screenshot with the layer mask button "pressed" by itself. I have not clicked on it. But I need to add this mask to the layer and it won't let me because it is already "clicked"...by itself. I know, very weird. I have to completely close out of Photoshop and reopen in order to fix this. About at my wits end...

As you can see, the button is pressed, without adding the mask. And it won't let me click to depress it. It just stays stuck like that. Hope this made better sense. I've tried to figure out what I'm doing when it happens, but it appears to be totally random.

I seem to remember posts about this type of problem turning up more and more recently, so I went to the Photoshop Feedback site to see if it had been reported and logged by Adobe. It sounds like it might be part of this problem:

Photoshop 21.1.0: "New Layer" and "New Group" buttons in the Layers panel stay down after clicking o...

Other users in that discussion say it affects the mask button in the same way.

An Adobe rep is in that discussion. He says Adobe logged it as a bug but they are not sure of the cause, so they are gathering information to isolate it. If that sounds like problem you see and you want to help them figure it out, you can follow the link above to that discussion.

HEllo, run the creative cloud application as the new update 21.1.2 fixes this very issue: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/fixed-issues.html#photoshop-desktop-fixed-issues

You might need to reset Preferences after the update. After backing up Actions, swatches, etc., that you have created, go to Preferences > General > Reset Preferences on Quit.

Had this issue today. After the update and doing the 'Reset preferences on Quit', seems to be back to working order..
