I have a layer that I can not delete. I'm taking a photoshop course online. Must of hit the wrong thing. It has a white square with a brush inside. It appears with every different photo that I bring into PS.
Please help!
That is just the bottom image layer. The brush icon shows it is a pixel layer and that you have thumbnails turned off for the layers panel.
If you click the 3 line square at the top right of the menu bar and choose panel options, change thumbnail size from none to one of the other three options.
That will change your layer icon from this :

How many layers do you have in the layers panel?
If you have ONLY one layer, you can't delete it As the the minimum number of layer must be at least one layer in each project.
you can create a new empty layer from the layers panel by pressing on create new layer icon, then delete any layer that you don't want.
if this is not the case , please show a screenshot

Please share a screenshot. Maybe you locked it, but that wouldn't make sense if it's on every photo.

No , I usually keep the thumbnails at small or medium so I can see an indication of the layer content. I find it more helpful than the icon representation that you showed earlier.
