Hi Photoshop community,

Is there a way to make the Lorem Ipsum text display in English; not Latin?

Trevor.Dennis Thanks for the heads up. Its available from my Amazon Audible and I am due for a freebee in the middle of the month.

Regarding Linotype, it was part of my early initiation into the family printing business. I was about ten and had graduated from sweeping floors and running errands after school. I was introduced to just-cast type that blistered my hands. The Lino men called it good natured fun. As I recall, that was followed up with a press foreman sending me to a neighboring shop to get a box of halftone dots. Once there and being told they had just used their last one, they sent me on to another shop, and so on. I didn't wise up until about the fifth shop. And so began my graphic arts education and solo view of all of Manhattan. Age ten.

These are opening lines for an interesting memoir. Now if you can find the time to dictate-to-text at least an hour a day. Could be ready for Christmas selling season. I would buy and read it. JH

Reading about ‘etaoin shrdlu’ reminded me of a famous language-parsing computer program of the late 60s / early 70s called SHRDLU. It was named after the Linotype machine key arrangement, of course, but it was a breakthrough program in computers being able to understand language. Siri, Alexa, Google et. al. owe something to this early forerunner of intelligent sidekicks.

Wikipedia says: The lorem ipsum text is typically a scrambled section of De finibus bonorum et malorum, a 1st-century BC Latin text by Cicero, with words altered, added, and removed to make it nonsensical, improper Latin.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorem_ipsum

That story of being sent to fetch a box of halftone dots is so funny. Maybe that should become the new English placeholder text

You can do it with the Script Event Manager ... but before you have to do some edits...

1) Uncomment "New Text Layer" in "Script Events Manager.jsx"

Change...

inObject['events'].push( new EventData( 'New Text Layer', 'Mk  ', 'TxLr' ) );

to

*/

inObject['events'].push( new EventData( 'New Text Layer', 'Mk  ', 'TxLr' ) );

/*

2) Add "New Text Layer" in "Script Events Manager.xml"

Add at the end of the <events>-tag ...

<9>

<name>New Text Layer</name>

<value>Mk  </value>

<valueClass>TxLr</valueClass>

</9>

3) Place a "placeholder.txt" (including your new text) at the Folder of Photoshop CC 2019

4) Copy "placeholder.jsx" to "Event Scripts Only" folder

Hey everyone, when testbed.eve is opened in a common text editor, it seems that the Photoshop boffin saw fit to put in 69 Latin words for their Lorem Ipsum.

What would be the ideal English words to substitute? I'm leaning towards Dickens' Tale of Two Cities:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

What passage would you choose?

Oops! I spoke too soon. After I edited testbed.eve, the Lorem Ipsum did not change for me. Photoshop's meager text seems limited to 32 false-Latin words, btw. Any further ideas, Tom Winkelmann?

I wish I'd read all the replies before trying it for myself.  It makes you wonder what 'testbed.eve' is for if editing doesn't make any apparent difference?

While this dubious idea is percolating, let me say how much I have been enjoying all your comments relative to the printing industry and past practices and the technological leap that was the Linotype machine. I, too, was sent on the rounds to pick up Lino output from other shops machines (hot lead splashes are very hot!) back in the 1970s.

I was once told to go to Helen Bach and borrow the "paper stretcher" from another shop.

BTW, here is a place I intend to visit this year:

Welcome to Howard Iron Works - Printing Museum and Antique Printing Machinery Restoration

Anyone up for a road trip?

Mike, it's Norman's comments that I love.  He is what we call here 'Bloody good value', which is remarkable seeing as he is well over 100 now.   He paints a picture with his descriptions, and I think we can all see those curmudgeonly print workers in our mind's eye, eagerly awaiting the next school trip visit to break up the day.   As you said back up the thread, Norman has lived with those early print machines, and I bet they were a devil to keep running, being as complex as they were.

In engineering the apprentice was sent to the stores for left handed hammers and screwdrivers, or my favourite, a 'long weight'.   The store men used to love that last one, making comments to ever more impatient victims that 'it shouldn't be long now' while they served other people still keeping the victim hanging.

It was not just the youngsters that underwent character building experiences.  A huge truck fitter call Black Jack used to wear an army webbing belt around his overalls.  On one occasion someone hooked the overhead gantry into the back of his belt, and lifted him off the ground.  The problem was that Black Jack had that nickname for a reason, and no one wanted to be close enough to let him down.  I've seen him throw hammers across the workshop in rage!  This was early 70s, and it wouldn't happen or be tolerated now.

I'll tell you one more story about Black Jack.  This was when the Ford Transit van was about to be released, and they had hand built one for the press to drive.  It was perfect, and had hundreds of hours of fine felling to make it just right.  Then on the eve of press release they decided that as it would be driven empty, the rear springs were too stiff, so Jack got the job of replacing them.  He lifted the van on the ramp, and put a length of four-b-two under the differential before lowering the ramp enough for the rear wheels to clear the ramp.  He then went off to find some axle stands.  When he got back he found that the wood and tilted forward, and the Transit had rolled off the front of the ramp and was now upside down on the workshop floor.  Ironically it was Jack's attitude that he got into trouble for, as he was in hysterical laughter for several minutes.  Of course, the motor industry never uses non-representative examples for press review nowadays.

Trevor.Dennis In the spirit of truth and total disclosure, I admit to low 90's. And since the objective of this Forum is to provide a ;variety of useful hints, I have one to offer to those in my age group:

A rule:

Each time you meet for lunch with your buddies, the first one to mention meds, doctors or aches pays for everyone's meal.

If you work it right you can eat free for years. Just say "How are ya?" a lot.
