Making selections is so slow in Photoshop 2025

Participant ,

Am I the only one?

Making selections with rectangle or oval select tool is so slow in Photoshop 2025. (26.1.0 release)  Reposition with spacebar is quit impossible. Already reset my preferences but didn't help.

What is happening?
(No, it's not the specifications of my MacPro...)

What is the image size?

And do you use system extensions like Magnet?

Images are 8700 x 11600 pix (100mpix)

No Magnet extension.

I had no problems with PS 2024, it started with PS 2025.

C'est vraiment une image très grande… Est ce que le problème est le même avec une image de 1920 px?

Pour moi c'est un image tout à fait normal, quand on travail en format moyen... 😉

Yes everything is relative, but  it is still a 38 cm image at 300 dpi or 1,61 meter at 72 dpi. So my question to understand if this issue is image size related.

BTW did you try to install last Sequoia 15.1.1 (24B91) which is maybe more suitable for last M4 chips?

It shouldn't be image size related as it was never a problem before PS 2025. All my images are that big, sometimes much bigger when stitched. Hasselblad H6D-400MS and X2D-100MS...

Still on Sonoma 14.7.1

My MacPro 2019 has Intel Xeon.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > Graphic Processor Settings) and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?

What are your Perfomance related Photoshop Preferences settings?

I tried this but it doesn't help.
My settings were always like this:

Please remember to restart Photoshop after changing Perfomance Preferences.

Are 50 History States necessary?

I did restart. Yes sometimes 50 history states can be a lifesaver. Having 384GB of ram it shouldn't hurt... I think?

I think you probably exceed installed RAM by good margin. This is why Photoshop uses a scratch disk to handle all the working data. There is no such thing as "enough RAM". Photoshop always needs more memory than that.

Either way, a scratch file is always written, and it always contains all history states for all open documents, plus overhead. Each history state potentially adds the full uncompressed file size.

How much free disk space do you have?

True that there is no such thing as enough RAM.

Scratchdisk are fast SSD's:

You're not alone! Many users are reporting similar issues with the selection tools in Photoshop 2025 (26.1.0). It seems like a performance bug in this release. Resetting preferences usually helps, but since that didn’t work for you, it might be worth checking for updates or reverting to a previous version if possible. You can also try toggling GPU settings in Preferences > Performance to see if that improves the tool's responsiveness. Hopefully, Adobe addresses this in a patch soon!
