marching ants not showing up when dragging rectangular marquee tool

Whenever I drag the rectangular marquee tool over any area of my document, no preview with the marching ants will show up. The marching ants will only show once I've released the drag.

I can still see the dimensions, but the actual preview for where I'm dragging has disappeared.

No idea why this is happening, I haven't changed any settings. Maybe I accidentally hit a shortcut for it? But that would be a very strange, useless shortcut to have.

I'm on Photoshop CC19.1.3.
