Hi All, wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Adobe Support seems to have no idea or wants to take over my entire PC to look at it. It's pretty simple - the marquee tool (M) is often (probably 80-90% of the time) just in the last couple of days, not working at all. You can select a rectangle and release the mouse button and the selection disappears. I've got the latest version of Photoshop CC 2017 and Windows 10 Home and have not seen this before. Have no plugins.
It's probably my most used tool as a web designer so this is rendering the app unusable for me. Any ideas?

Do all of the Marquee tools have the same problem or just Rectangle Marquee?
Try Elliptical, Single Row vertical, Single Row Horizontal.
I have no problems at all with Photoshop 2017.1.0 on a PC, with Windows 7/64 Ultimate.
Assume that the area you drew the rectangle was really there , albeit invisible.
Try to fill that invisible rectangle with the Paint Bucket with a solid color.
Starting to lean towards a Video Driver problem.

Confirmed it's happening with all Marquee tools, not just rectangle. It's not making the selection at all (can test it with Q for quick mask). That tells me it's not to do with the video drivers, even still, have disabled them and rolled back and turned off GPU acceleration and it's still happening.

Has this ever been answered. I am having this same issue now. Marquee selection only appear after F5 or any window resize event. Its clearly a windows thing. I use PSE 14 and installed 2019 with same issue.

Have you reset your preferences? When things start to go wonky, after working well, that's the first place to check.

Yep, have done that, uninstalled, reinstalled PS as well. No dice.

I'm having the exact same issue as bradc34223409 described and showed in his video. Using F5 like MakImage describes does show the selection, but it's not animating. It does apply to other tools as well, the Text tool for instance does not update while you type. The paint bucket doesn't show until F5 is pressed (or other refresh method).
It started happening to me when I got a new PC and upgraded to Windows 10 last month. Tried reinstalling, resetting, results stay the same. I've been using and old version ever since which is kind of ridiculous.
Apparently this is not a one user glitch. It would be much appreciated if brad could tell us if and how he fixed this. It would be even better if Adobe came up with a proper answer.

This may be a crazy answer, but worth a try. Control+H is meant to toggle hiding "marching ants" in an active selection (sometimes, the visible selection is distracting). It's possible it got hit randomly at some point - especially if the image is showing the selection when going into Quick Mask. Try just hitting Ctrl+H when you have an active selection, and see if that resolves something...

Thank you for answering. No that's not it, selection view is on and selection does display after refresh. However, there are no 'marching ants', just 'frozen ants' if you will. Because of these frozen ants I am convinced this is a paint/animation issue.
P.S. This concerns PSE2018 on Win10x64 with GTX780Ti. I have already cleared settings, reinstalled, updated/reinstalled GPU drivers. And it worked on my old Win7 PC with the same GTX780Ti card.

Hi
If it concerns Photoshop Elements you have posted on the wrong forum

When this bug was happening to me, I had the Rulers option enabled. When I turned off the Rulers option, everything worked fine.
