Mass update linked objects by file instead of individual artboard

I do my design work for flats in Illustrator on artboards, and do my fancy product mockups in Photoshop.
My current workflow requires me to update each peice individually.  For full sports jersey mock-ups (ie) I have to re-connect each sleeve/pannel, collar, back, front individually to each artboard from the master .ai file.

Is there a way to have photoshop look at the master ai file and just auto pull in all the artboards to where they should go?  It would definitely speed up my workflow, as getting these 3d mock-ups to look correct is often more time intensive than the actual design work.

@Dame Vigo

Copy from Illustrator and paste into Photoshop tends center the object.

Here's what I do:

  • Confirm that I am using pixels in both Illy and PS and confirm both are the same size
  • Draw an invisible square in two corners in Illustrator (upper left and lower right) on each artboard in Illustrator to define the size. Use the Transform panel to be precise.
  • Copy from Illy and paste to PS. If necessary, confirm the placement of the squares
  • Repeat for the other pieces

I’m using linked art boards embedded in smart objects and it works great. If not embedded in smart objects my mock up auto updates with my changes on my flats, which is super awesome.

However when I make a new file either to do version changes, or a new project I have to individually link all the pieces back up.

What I’m trying to find out if someone knows how to get all the linking to happen by master file instead of per art board.

My print file doesn’t hinge on managing pixel vector exchange between the two- so I don’t have to worry about sizing. Which can be a pain.

If you use copy and paste between the programs… then nothing updates with revisions.

The artboards are placed linked into Photoshop as separate files. This is what needs to be updated, Photoshop isn't looking within a single Ai file for individual artboards. See my (updated for clarity) previous reply.

If the size of the content on each Ai artboard doesn't change, save them using consistent  generic names and resolutions and pixel width and height. Place them as linked smart objects so that when opening the PSD all assets are automatically updated. When creating a new variation, save the artboards to a new folder with the same names. When you open a copy of the PSD and manually relink one missing file, all other linked files will automatically update to the new folder using the same file names.

It does not- I didn't consider exporting and then placing, that might work. Thank you! I'll give this a whirl

lol- that’s what I’ve been doing. I was trying to figure out if there was a way to get a cascade update by the master file instead of linking each of back up.

Some way to tell Photoshop- hey look at xxxxxfile update all links.

No, Photoshop considers the separate artboards as separate pages.

My point has been by using generic names and new locations, one only has to relink once and all separate links should automatically update.

So like, all the AI artboards contain different parts of the jersey, then they're assembled into a single jersey in your PS file, am I reading you right?

Yes that is it exactly.
