I want to merge 3 layers, (a logo and 2 bits of text) into a single layer. I'm working with a white background layer to make things easier. If I have all the layers visible I can select merge visable from the menu, but if I turn off the background (which is what I want) the merge visble option dissapears from the menu. How can I merge my 3 layers so that I have a see through background (effectivly a png)

If Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, select the layers you want to merge and then Ctrl + Shift + Alt + E.

That will create a new layer with the layers merged.

By @John Dudley

It sounds like the background layer is still the one selected in the panel (though hidden).

Click one of the layers you want to merge. The Merge Visible command will then work, and the merged result will take the name of the selected layer.
