Mirror Reflection removal for ARW format?

Community Beginner ,
Dec 21, 2024 Dec 21, 2024

The new AI to remove reflections works on *.RAW files but will not accept Sony's raw format *.ARW

Is this likely to be fixed shortly, or is there a way of converting *.ARW to a RAW format it likes?

I was having the same issue. The only way I can get it to work with .ARW files is to open the PS and locate the photo on my hard.  It should automatically open in Camera Raw and the reflections removal should be available. I found that it wasn't working when I would click "edit in Adobe Photoshop 2025" from LR.

Which Sony camera model are your ARW files from? Newer, unsupported models require a Camera Raw upgrade.

This link shows currently supported cameras.  New cameras might take a month or two to become supported.

Thanks. I am using a Sony A6000 series. For RAW in general, this works fine. It seems to be specifically the new AI reflection filter that isn't recognising it.

I just tried it on an .ARW from a Sony a7R V - still the latest model in the a7R series - and reflection removal works as it should.

I'm guessing you have the camera set to reduced size raw? That won't work with most of these algorithms. They need to work with mosaiced Bayer encoded data. The smaller files have been demosaiced in camera, otherwise it would break the Bayer decoding in the raw processor.

Thanks for checking this.
My A6000 series is quite old now, and doesn't have such a choice of formats - there is RAW, RAW+JPEG, FINE and STANDARD, so I guess the RAW it saves is not 'mosaic'-ed (what that means is beyond my knowledge!) and I am stuck gradually unable to access more and more of such featres until I replace it.

Thanks again for checking.

I have the same problem ans switching to uncompressed does not solve it on my A7R5. Neither does opening directly from my hard disk. The funny thing is that it worked two times a week ago......

I also have a Sony a7rv and tried this remove flection in PS beta. In camera I use uncompressed RAW files as you show. I open the file directly from PS beta and in ACR the "remove reflection" is available but Apply is not possible (!) because "Remove reflection is currently not compatible with this file format".

Do you have any ideas what is wrong?

Best regards

John

@john sanderl65775692

Does it look like this in ACR? Or is it grayed out?

Also, double-check the raw file type. That's the only thing I know of that will prevent reflection removal from working.

Only the "Apply" is greyed out. I double checked the file settings in camera and it is uncompressed raw??

Yes, I posted an old screenshot, the panel is slightly changed now. Anyway, I retested and it still works without issue on a7r v raw files.

What is your GPU status  in ACR preferences > performance?

The system supports limitted acceleration, not full. Maybe thats the problem? Do I have to buy a new GPU?

@BlindCast Media

Actually, "Edit in Photoshop" is not the issue, because it produces an RGB file in Photoshop. Remove Reflections only works on raw sensor data.

The real difference is that some of these new AI-based functions are not yet available in Lightroom at all. They will be; but for now, they are "technology previews" in ACR only. Beta features, if you like.

AFAIK this is the first time in history when there isn't full functional correspondence between ACR and LrC. But it's only temporary.

Here's the Remove module in ACR:

And here's the same module in Lightroom Classic:
