Need Help.!!

Hi, 

I hope someone can help me with the issue I am having. In photoshop, I would make a shape and use a mask to fade out the edges. When I use the shortcut "x" to switch from foreground and background or vise versa, the color of the shape will change as well. I would have to undo and then paint over the mask. I would have to repeate the process again to make a switch.  Is there a way to avoide the changing of the color of the shape whne I switch my foreground and background.??

P.S} This issue also applies when you switch the foreground and background manualy. 

I am using a PC platform

I don't seem to be able to replicate that here in CC v22.1. As long as I click on the mask in the layers panel (and not on the shape) only the foreground and background for painting on the mask are changed. Switching back to the shape , the foreground and background are not swapped.

Hi Dave, 

yes, I have the mask selected when I do the switch. I forgot to mention this happens only when I am using a graidient. Not a Solid color. Please let me know if this happens on your end?

No they are still independent using a shape with a gradient fill. Can you show a screenshot, or two, and I will try and replicate exactly what you are doing

Hi Dave, 

Sure.. first picture, I made a shape using a pen tool. I made a graident fill, it was a color gradient, so I changed it to black and white. I add a mask and paint over the mask.

Now I want to switch , so  I press "X" and now my shape changed color to what I had previously. See below

... I had to undo to get back my b/w graifent and then paint my mask. The mask is selcected.   This the issue I have been experiencing.

To confirm: the shape was green and red before you made it b&w? Can you try it again with the History panel open? Do you see anything there that explains the color shift when you press "X"?

Yes it was green and red before. I tried it again and this what happened.... see picture before

it acted like an action when I click on "x" to make the switch.

Are you saying you pressed "X" one time and all four "Set Shape Layer Fill" steps appeared? Possibly something has taken over your X key shortcut, but you might want to follow Dave's directions to Reset Preferences.

Thanks for the screenshots.  I still could not replicate that.

I would do the following :

1. Save your presets and actions

2. Reset Preferences (Preferences >General >Reset Preferences on Quit)
