New Smart Layer

New Here ,
Aug 29, 2025 Aug 29, 2025

Every time I open a file in photoshop it automatically adds a new smart layer. I do NOT have "always create smart objects when placing" checked in preferences. How can I stop this ?

You can back up preferences first - then restore them if resetting does not resolve your issue.

If you are opening RAW files from Camera RAW, then the default is to Open Object.  If you use the drop down and choose Open then it will open as an ordinary raster layer.

Thank you - I do know about that but what I meant was that it adds the smart layer to anything I open in ps not just raw files from camera raw.

Thank you!
Same happens if I drag and drop.

Under preferences - that is unchecked

Not using action settings

If I do the reset preferences - will that possibly delete any saved
settings ? Seems like i recently read somewhere that that can happen if
you reset.
Thank you!
