No jpg option with Save for Web [Legacy] in PS

I have an image post processed in ACR; saved as a jpg. Copied it, resized, exported with Save for Web [legacy] in PS and saved as a jpg. But its too large, so using the original full size jpg image I copied it again, resized it but now when I export with Save for Web [legacy] in Ps it does not allow it to be saved as a jpg. It only offers “Images only, HTML or both.” The original image I’m working from and the first resize are saved as jpg. So there is not a 16 bit issue or layers involved. Preferences => File Handling => Enable Legacy ‘Save As’ is ticked. I also tried Export => Export As => jpg but with that it’s over 1 MB which is too big b/c this is for the web. What is wrong? It saved as jpg now it won’t. How do I fix this so resized images can be Save for the Web [legacy] as jpg? I’ve tried more than one image and cannot save any of them as jpg now.

**The wording of the text did not change. How “invalid HTML” got into the original message I don’t know, but perhaps this gives insight to issue of no jpg option when exporting. In any event…how does “invalid HTML” get into a document and/or images and more importantly how do I get rid of it?

First of all we need to point out the elephant in the room. Do not resave jpegs if it can be avoided. Jpeg compression is destructive, non-reversible and cumulative. Every time you resave a jpeg, it degrades further. After 5 or 6 resaves, depending, you can usually see it starting to come apart.

Keep PSD or TIFF master files. When you need a jpeg, save out once from the master file.

Note that there is no such thing as "maximum quality" with jpeg. The destructive compression algorithm is always at work.

With all that said, I can't think of a "standard" scenario where Save For Web will not accept the file (except special cases). Please post a screenshot of Photoshop with the file open, showing the full interface, and layers/channels panels open. Also a screenshot of Save For Web with the file open.

I can't see any problems here. What happens when you click "Save"? There's no reason to be concerned with the format rolldown. Leave it at images and html. The file format has already been decided in the Save For Web dialog - as you can see, the saved file name already has a .jpg extension.

Hahaha ... Honestly, I haven't tried saving it as 'Images Only" because I am apprehensive that whatever that means will cause the image to somehow be unusable for the web. I've been working on alot of images with resizing and saving for web purpose and there is always a jpg option and now all of a sudden there isn't one.  So before saving and possibly causing a greater issue I've tried to get the jpg option in the dropdown menu back.  However, with that said, I will save that image now and will post the results....shortly ...

It did exactly as you said...saved as a jpg with seemingly no further issues. I deeply appreciate your participation, excellent advice and insights regarding jpg and tif quality retention, your expertise and patience.  Apologizies for using your time when it was apparently unnecessary.  From my personal perspective, be sure, your time and expertise are true gifts and not one bit misused for so many reasons. Thank you for the gifts you so generously share.

If you choose HTML and images you get an HTML page with the image inserted in the page.

Save for web was introduced many years ago when Photoshop was used to create web pages, so this is a legacy setting.

Just choose Images only.

And always check both Convert to sRGB and Embed color profile.

Excellent. Thank you for your valuable input. The test image I saved was Images Only ... but it is wise to know what Images and HTML would do.  Convert to sRGB ✔
