Not enough memory (RАМ) - still not fixed!

Hi all,

I opened a very small PSD file - 735x200 - 115 kb. After that I tried to place an image as a smart object. The image was only 108 kb. And then BOOM - Could not place "image-name" because there is no enough memory (RAM).

At this moment the used ram was 33% - from everything, not only from Photosop.

I am having this issue 4 months alrady and tryed everything from the community but still exist and stopping me from work. As I can see from the community it's not something new. It is a shame that Adobe still can't fix this. This is what I am working and in such a cases I am forced to use other software... and soon I will just migrate to something new and never go back to Adobe, not because I like the other stuff more but it just WORKS and I am not paying for just having the Ps icon on my desctop!

As from Adobe will ask, here is the software info:

Creative cloud version: 5.3.1.470

Photoshop version is: 21.2.4
Window 10 Pro

Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1139)

All apps up to date!

Hi all,

I had a chat with Adobe suport and I found a solution which worked for me.

Here are the stepa:

1. Open Adobe Creative Cloud app and check if you have more that one version of photoshop. If there is more that one, uninstall the older version and leave only the newest.
2. *This step will erase your brushes, colors, presets etc.!
Press and hold the Control + Shift + Alt keys together and open the Photoshop through Creative Cloud while holding the keys.
You will see a pop-up prompting you to delete the settings of Photoshop, please choose "Yes" - Keep the three buttons pressed until you see the pop up -it will pop up before photoshop loads.

This solution works for now.

I installed 22.1.1 last week. Again, I hit the "not enought memory" message.

I turned off "Use Graphics Processor" and it went away. This was the same soluition I used in the previous version.

I also have it turned off in Lightroom for similar reasons.

I have a GeForce GTX 1660 so nothing special there.

That's a buggy driver. Update it or roll back.

Under normal circumstances the GPU will have some onboard memory, and use some borrowed system memory. So these things are integrated and dynamic, and a badly written driver can cause these errors.

So it wasn't the scratch disk. Still, there's a problem here. I see you have dual graphics (Nvidia + Intel), which never works well with Photoshop.

It may affect RAM management because both use system memory - the Intel uses only system memory because there's no onboard video RAM, the Nvidia will usually have a portion allocated in addition to its own VRAM.

The main issue with dual graphics - which may seem like a good idea on the surface - is that the GPU is no longer a one-way funnel like it used to be. With current, advanced applications, the GPU is a central hub for a lot of actual data processing. Data go back and forth between the GPU and Photoshop all the time. So, Photoshop needs to know which GPU to talk to, and where to get the results back from.

This has been a problem ever since dual graphics laptops started to emerge. You'd think it should be an easy matter to "lock" Photoshop to one of them - but since this is still a problem after many years, it's apparently not so simple. Maybe the necessary APIs simply don't exist (yet).

In any case, try to disable the Intel (or at least one of them).

Unfotunately it didn't help. I forced Photoshop to use the NVIDIA GPU but still the same. Also I am not sure that this might be the problem as I am using laptops with two GPUs more that 8 years, never had this problem before. Other think is how this problem affects only photoshop - I am using also Illustrator, Lightroom, Premier, After Effects and Animate - no any problem with way more heavyer files and processes.

Seem like the best solution for the moment is dropping Photoshop as a tool...

I am using a time tracker for every task. Yesterday for a common task which usualy takes me no more that 15 minutes I had to try everythink possible for more thatn an hour... and at the end I just created everythink in other program so I can finish my task.

Both PSD and JPG 72 DPI. That's not the problem, it's not only with those two file, it is a pain in the *&$ to use photoshop for any task.

How much RAM installed and how much actively available?

Also most of the time there is no preview when using crop tool. I just move the crop area - without seeing what actuali will be croped - and once press enter I can see the image again. It is the same with selection tool a lot of times - can't see what I am selecting. Sometimes when I start Photoshop it takes all the available RAM for like 10-20 second, without opening a file, just Photoshop.

My laptop ise pretty new and it is with not bad characteristics, Photoshop worked perfect untill before few month.
