Every 1st - 7th time i use Rectangular marquee tool, dragging it outside the image bounds Photoshop freezes - only way out of it is killing it in Task manager.  If i CAREFULLY make sure i never drag outside the image bounds i am usually fine, but that is not always possible... Its been like this for about a year. The frustration level with the issue is now larger than the frustration level from the hoops to jump through to report the issue so here i am. Also it seems like Photoshop is not entirely managing to update the screen as i get residue pixels from previous operations floating around on my image - especially the edges seem to be "sticky" In the frozen pic you can see a blue line at the right and bottom edge to illustrate this. Zooming in or out mostly fixes it but its nevertheless contributing to a feel of a buggy program. I have bought and used Photoshop for the past...i dont know...10 - 15 years? and i basically loved it for all this time. All these issues started when i was forced into the subscription model. I am at a point now where it seems like the program is moving backwards and i am considering looking into the free alternatives. Id rather not but..eh.

I reset preferences, unticked this and that - ticked that and this, restarted, waited, updated drivers, updated Photoshop, searched the internet for answers and tried them out again and again, poked around in DoS- commands where i should probably not have poked, plugged in my Wacom tablet only to be met with the usual gazillion other issues with my danish keyboard that also needed hours and days of researching to finally get it working...until the next update of either Photoshop or the tablet or Windows or the graphics card where everything was reset and the circus repeated. I am TIRED of hunting bugs and i am sorry for not having kept a log through the past many months to make it precisely clear what i tried so far. Don't get me wrong i know all this is not always Photoshops fault. There are a lot of companies working together to get me my tools i need (or not working together as is sometimes the impression from the customers viewpoint) But this selection issue gets to me - i use it ALL the time. Please help - i am loosing faith.

Any resoluton to this? Clearing preferences never works. Object selection tool freezes Photoshop, and I must use task manager to end it. I just discovered it took like 6 minutes for it to unfreeze.

Same here. Just purchased Photoshop and am learning how to use it and having this happen isn't a good look for software I was told was great to use. The object selection tool and anything I attempt to do utilizing it seems to freeze the entire program. Sometimes the wait is bearable, other times I had to force it closed via task manager. I'm in my trial period and may cancel in a few days if I keep getting bottlenecks like these as I attempt to learn as I use.

Im having this exact same problem.  Its happening to me multeple times per day and Im losing a lot of work because if it. 

Though the selection tool often causes this freeze, it happens during other random circumstances as well such as selecting a layer, or even during a file save.   When the freeze occurs, and I check the task manager, I see one CPU thread pegging away at 100%.  Ive experimented with waiting to see if itll 'let go' but never does.  I always have to kill the photoshop process and then restart my work.  

This is a serious problem for professionals using PS in a work environment.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

No error is displayed. It freezes. I have to force quit with Task Manager every time. I have waited a considerable amount of time. As far as the preferences, I cleared it by deleting, so i could save a copy. It was occuring when executing the Camera Raw filter too. That is resolved when clearing cache. Would the more stable or faster selections processing fix this?

You use the word Crash and Freeze interchangibly. Does it crash out completely and display the crash reporter dialog? Or does it freeze and you need to use Task Manager to kill the frozen Photoshop process.

When you restored your prefs, did you use the keyboard shortcut? Or did you manually remove the whole Adobe Photoshop Settings folder using this process? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually If not, try doing that method.
