Object Selection Tool not selecting

I got used to using Object Selection Tool on my old 2015 iMac (the auto select, colour overlay object recognition).  I recently acquired a new MacStudio, new install of PS22 and Object Selection isn't working properly.  Some images it says "nothing detected" after I press the refresh button.  Some images once I make a lasso around an object it will make a poor selection.  I'm trying to get the "magic" autoselect back!  Help Please.

Hi @slr217 curious if you are using Roesetta? In your sysinfo we see you are running X64 build on an Apple Silicon Mac which would indicate you launched Ps using Rosetta.

Thank you,

Hi @slr217 Okay, thanks for the clarification. To confirm, the Object Finder doesn't work on any type of image you try? You are running Photoshop 23.4.1 with a 2015 iMac. If you revert to the previous release, does the tool work? Have you tried a preferences reset? Tried any other troubleshooting steps? Is your graphics card compatible and updated? If you still can't get it to work, copy and paste your System Info here in a new reply so we can take a look.

To clarify, it's the "Object Finder" specifically that I am having problem with.  On my old computer it worked just as described in the Steve Patterson video - turn it on and "objects" could be identified with overlay simply by mousing over them.  This feature is not working at all.  Nothing that I do finds objects automatically.  i.e. I never get an overlay.  (and yes, I've checked the opacity, colour, show etc settings).  The "old" style lasso feature sometimes works (but it's hit and miss).  The object finder is not working AT ALL.

On v23.3.1 and Win 10, I've had to turn those colors off cos they were so wrong and weird often.

OTOH, I enjoy the tool for specific selections, but I'm sometimes surprised how much it can be off for simple things. Some of that is cos I'm on a wrong layer, or the Sample All Layers should be checked (or not).
I'm also surprised how often it does it well.

Hi @slr217, I've had this problem too, and I found this video that helped me to understand all the settings with the Object Selection Tool and the Object Finder. Steve Patterson covers both the old and new versions of using these tools, and how bad selections can be corrected using a combination of settings with the lasso and rectangle tools. Let us know if this helps, or if it's a specific bug you are experiencing. Any screenshots or videos of what is happening on your end will help. As you know, with auto selections, a lot depends on the image you are working with.
