P: Photoshop v26.9 & 26.10 crash when opening JPEG on Windows

Hello, I have a problem with Photoshop: the software systematically crashes as soon as I try to import a JPG file. I've already tried several solutions: Uninstall and reinstall Photoshop, Uninstall Adobe Creative Cloud, Update my graphics drivers, Check my system compatibility (everything is indicated as compatible). Unfortunately, nothing works. Could this problem be with Adobe, or is there another avenue to explore?

Apart from you, go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling > Set All JPEG to open via Camera Raw.

Bonjour,

Depuis hier Photoshop 26.10 plante à chaque ouverture de fichier (jpg, png, ou tiff). 

Sous Windows 11, Asus ROG Strix G. 
Extremenent handicapant... Bien sur, ça arrive au milieu d'une deadline de rendu de projet.

(Indesign, Illustrator fonctionnent eux correctement) 

J'arrive encore à ouvrir les fichiers psd, même lourds. 

J'ai tenté d'installer la version précédente, même problème. 
J'ai tenté de modifier les préférences, d'alouer plus de RAM, d'annuler l'utilisation de la carte graphique, de mettre à jour le pilote de la carte graphique, toujours pas d'amélioration. 

Je ne sais plus quoi faire!

Thank you for your help, it was indeed that troublesome graphics card that was causing the problem...

Actually, the problem isn't solved... I can now open some PNG files, but not JPG files...

Thanks for the updates @gwladysdarlot. PNG files are not handled the way JPEGs are, so the issue might not be related to PNGs. Try these two sets of troubleshooting steps (@glug45778506, @StingRat, @Kitty_Kat_13😞 

First, go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to backup.

• Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
• You can press Press the Windows key > Enter 'Run' > Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe
• Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2025 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2025. old), You can restore these preferences later if you need to.(https://adobe.ly/4860qM9)

Second, clear the GPU info & Logs location on Windows is %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A shortcut to get to this folder on Windows is:

• Press the Windows + R
• Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw
  
  
• Rename the GPU & Logs folder in this directory by adding .old at the end. (GPU.old & Logs.old)
• Launch Photoshop & Camera Raw again.

@Kitty_Kat_13, your system info still shows Intel Drivers from 67 Months ago. Please update the GPU drivers using Intel Driver Assistant and then follow the two sets of steps I've shared above. 

@gwladysdarlot & @Kitty_Kat_13: You can attempt to manually reset Camera Raw by going to the following location %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A shortcut to get to this folder on Windows is:

• Press the Windows + R
• Enter %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw
  
  
• Rename or delete the Settings and UI folders.

Sameer, I am having the same issues with PS 2025, I followed the instructions above, didn't work. Can you assist?  I am unable to open .tif, .pdf, .jpg files that I created in PS 2025 today, ps crashed. when I try to reset the camera raw, it crashes as soon as I click in it also. I am able to open and edit .psd files without issue, and create .tif, .pdf, .jpg also wiothout issue. I checked GPU compatibility:

Hi Guys,

I have been opening jpeg files in photoshop for years and all of a sudden I am not getting an error  from photoshop when I try to open one. The error is non descript - it says photoshop has encountered a problem and has to close. I am also finding this happens when i go to preferences for camera raw and filters for camera raw.  I can open PSD files no problem. I don't have any plug ins installed.  When I view the error report there is a lot of information showing there but I don't know what I am looking at/for. 

Any suggestions how I can fix this?

I uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop yesterday to no avail. I have installed the latest update. 

I have sent the error report to photoshop numerous times yesterday but haven't heard anything from them.

Hey, @glug45778506. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. Crashes are frustrating. I'll need more information to help you figure this out. Please share the system information from Photoshop Help > System Info > Copy and paste it into a text document > Upload and attach it here. 

I couldn't find crash reports submitted with the account you've signed in to the community with. If you see a crash dialogue, submit it with your Adobe ID. Check here for more steps: https://adobe.ly/3Wpjx0B  

As a workaround, go to Edit > Preferences > Camera Raw > File Handling > Set All JPEG to open via Camera Raw.

I am having the same issue you replied to in the previous post. Everytime I try to open or drag & drop a pic PS 2025 crashes I installed this today. I also tried the same thing in the 2025 beta version, same issues. I copied the crash report, see below.

I have win 11 and just installed PS 2025. I am having the same issue, it crashes when I try to upload or open a file. I need this for my classes, can anyone assist?

Based on all my crash reports, ChatGPT concluded the root cause was the same, and my issue was resolved after I followed these steps.

all three crash reports point to the same root cause: Photoshop is crashing while initializing DirectX 12 through the Intel UHD Graphics driver. In the stacks you shared, the crash happens in OpenAdapter12 → D3D12GetInterface, with the Intel DX12 module (igd12umd64.dll) involved. You also have an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super, but the Intel driver is very old (2020) and is conflicting, which is why it crashes whether you’re using Harmonize or simply opening/dropping a JPG.

Quick fix (try in this order):

1. Force Photoshop to use the NVIDIA GPU only
   Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Browse/Add Photoshop.exe → Options → choose High performance (NVIDIA) → Save → restart Photoshop.

2. Update (or temporarily disable) the Intel UHD driver

   • Prefer: install the latest Intel DCH driver from Intel/OEM (your current is 26.20.100.7985, which is very old).

   • If you can’t update right now: Device Manager → Display adapters → Intel(R) UHD Graphics → right-click Disable device (test), then re-enable after you’ve updated.

3. Turn off/limit GPU in Photoshop (to confirm the cause)
   Photoshop → Edit → Preferences → Performance → uncheck “Use Graphics Processor” (or click Advanced Settings… and set Drawing Mode to Basic) → restart Photoshop.
   If crashes stop, it’s a GPU/driver issue for sure.

4. Remove virtual/ghost display drivers
   Your system shows “LuminonCore IDDCX Adapter” (a virtual display). Uninstall/disable any virtual monitor/remote display apps that installed this, then reboot. These often break DX12 adapter selection.

5. (Optional) Driver hygiene
   Update to the NVIDIA Studio Driver, and keep Photoshop up to date.

That should resolve it in most cases. If it still crashes after steps 1–4, let me know which steps you tried and we’ll dig deeper.
