hey everyone. im familiar with photoshop but editing pictures for fun to get used to it. ive drawn lines before with the pen tool and its not hard, but for some reason photoshop wont let me change the weight or color of the line i made. this should be a super easy thing that i have now spent 2 hours on. ive asked all my graphic designer friends and they dont know and neither does the internet. the options bar where i should be able to change the weight and color will not let me click them and everything else on the bar is greyed out. im going crazy at this point trying to draw a line ahhhhh anyways please give suggestions thanks.

that is not an option. when i say i want the line as a shape it lets me change width and color but then it doesn't let me click stroke path which is what i need the line for.

You need to right click on the path and select Stroke Path

Your layer is a smart object, if you want to edit the smart object you need to double click on it and it will open in a new window, then you can select the stroke path option

at first, no. i dont want it to be a shape. then i tried converting it to a shape and that let me change the weight and fill but then i had all the shapes to deal with erasing. so i tried erasing them and got the line but then i couldnt edit the line at all because it rasterized. the line i tried clicking in that picture is not a shape though, just the pen tool.
