Photoshop 2022 issues with multiple GPUs - help

Hello,

i added two RTX A5000 gpus to my system, in addition to a 2080TI i had previously.

Multiple Nvidia drivers are not allowed so i'm using 2080TI's latest drivers since this is the GPU i use for display. The A5000 are just for GPU rendering with Octane and are not connected to any monitor.

All 3d software are OK, display is correct and GPU engines render nicely on the A5000s.

Surprisingly enough, the only app which has issues is Photoshop.

It detects the 2080TI correctly, but images i open are empty (flat gray, no visible layer in Layer panel) and after some clicks system freezes and i've to reboot manually. I tried to disable GPU in photoshop options but i get freezes anyway.

Is there a solution to keep current setup and have PS working ?

Otherwise i have to remove the 2080TI and use one of the A5000 for display (with its quadro driver) just to get PS working. It could be a solution but it would suck.

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

A couple of questions from our engineers:
You mention using the A5000 for rendering in 3D apps. Are you trying to load something 3D in PS?
If you re-launch Photoshop and only open simple/flat raster images like JPGs do they open fine? If so, does it also happen with a simple PSD with no 3D layers/content in them?

Hi,
no, i do not use 3d in photoshop at all.
JPG/TIF load fine if i disable GPU in PS, but it's too slow to be used.
With GPU on in PS, both load but image is nod visible /just grey space) and system freezes after some clicks.

Hopefully there is a fix, all other apps are ok with this setup. In worst case i'll remove the 2080TI and use one of the two A5000 for display, but this is far from being a good solution.

We reached out to our contacts at NVIDIA and, unfortuantely, they're basically saying that Geforce and Quadro cards/drivers are not compatibile with one another.

thank you for answering. Yes, this is the "official" answer. 

Then, in pratical terms you can mix a 2080 and a A5000 until you use them for different purposes, as i was doing.
Important thing is that 2080 is driving display and thus 2080 driver is installed. A5000 then can be used for GPU computing in 3d apps with 2080's driver, since that driver is enough to activate Cuda cores in A5000.
All 3d apps were fine with this setup.

It would be cool if Photoshop makes a deeper check and excludes any non-display card - in theory, being 2080 used for display and using 2080's proper driver, Photoshop should be able to work seamlessly too.
I would say there is something to fix, probably not a bug but some missing exclusions or checks.
For now i removed the 2080 and working just with the two A5000, but it's not an optimal setup since display chockes when i'm doing GPU computing.

I suspect this might be the same issue as another far more common problem: dual GPUs in laptops. That comes up about once a day and that too chokes Photoshop.

So as common as this is, and as frequently reported here, we can safely assume it's well known to Adobe.

The fact that it's still unresolved suggests it's not as simple as one might think. Yes, it should be possible to "lock" Photoshop to one GPU and tell it to ignore the others. On the face of it, that should be a simple solution to all these problems.

Maybe the required APIs simply don't exist. If so, it would be a Microsoft feature request rather than an Adobe feature request.
