Photoshop 21.1.2 Zoom and Pan Freeze

I'm running into a problem where zooming and panning via the hand tool's spacebar shortcut seems to freeze up everything but the navigation bar at the top of Photoshop on Windows 10. 

It doesn't happen every time I use spacebar to quickly access the hand tool and pan, but once it does, Photoshop is nearly non-responsive. Luckily, I can still save my document, but that's about it. The view will be frozen, my default system cursor takes over so I'm unable to see the tool-specific cursors, and none of the tools are able to be actually selected. It's like everything besides the top menu is completely frozen, like I'm staring at a screenshot of the Photoshop I was just working on as opposed to running the actual program. I originally wondered if going into fullscreen mode would help, but it didn't seem to work at all.

It should be noted that I've replicated this issue with a mouse, since I originally thought this was an issue with my pen tablet display. I actually spent a couple days uninstalling both Photoshop and my tablet drivers and starting from scratch - down to removing excess files by hand. I've also run through some cursory troubleshooting steps, given Photoshop more access to RAM, and switched over to legacy compositing to see if it'd help. Nothing, so far.

Currently, my temporary fix is to save the file and completely restart Photoshop. I had originally been closing the file but not Photoshop, and just reloading the piece, but it seems like the error occurred more frequently with this fix as opposed to completely closing and starting up again. The error feels random, so I can't verify that this is the case, however. Quitting works for a short while, obviously, but it's impossible to tell when you're going to have to do so again, and doing this dozens of times within a couple hours is really starting to drag.

I'd love to find a fix! The spacebar zoom and pan is SUCH a huge part of my workflow when painting and photo-editing. I absolutely love it and don't want to have to live without it!

Seems to happen after I make a selection and then use liquify.  If I forget to deselect the selection after using liquify, the zoom, pan and crop tool will not work correctly.

This is still happening with your latest version as of 12/9/2021. When zoomed in sometimes, it freezes up and I can't zoom out. I can still save and close it out but I have to re-open it and go back to what I was doing before

Running the 23.1 on Windows, I have the same problem very often. Do you have a workaround ?

Only workaround for me was going back to Version CC2019 via Creative Cloud, no issues there.

Disabling "flick panning" as discussed above is the only workaround if you want to use recent versions.

Hi, has there been a fix for this issue yet?

I have the same issue when zooming in and moving it crashes, i have to save, close and reopen, I have 32gb of RAM, Ryzen 7 CPU and nvidea 1660 GPU.
I am working on photos that are pretty big and so unsure if that's the issue(roughly 7000px x 5000px).
I have just done a full reinstall of windows 11 and it still happens S it did wirh windows 10?

What just came to me - it only seems to happen at a deeper zoom level. Next time this happens, try to read and note the zoom level, I'll do so as well. Since it seems to happen randomly, this could be it. It also happens to me at 36 MP images.

I have experienced the performance of PS seems to depend on zoom level - on the tablet version, it lags terribly at zoom levels from 51% to 150%, performs badly from 150-160% and from 160% performs smoothly, so there must be some underlying system tied to this and I'm investigating atm. Adobe blamed it on the Apple Pen, but it's finger & pen and I assume the desktop version is using a similar system, and maybe that ties to the image "freezing".

Using an Asus Tuf dash 15 with bamboo tablet and also have the freezing problem. It's always on 1.1 (100%) zoom. The problem persists on my desktop system.

It would seem to be an Adobe issue if it's a constant issue even at this time on different platforms, OS and PS versions.

So, after "fixing" the problem by disabling flick panning, I'm now facing the next challenge: After zoominng in on pixel level, the entire image shifts to top left corner.

I can only zoom all the way out - with Alt-mouswheel - to be able to view a thumbnail size, then zoom back in the same way and when I try panning with Space, it jumps and hides in top left corner again. 

So back to save and restart. Great!

Did you try to disable the native canvas in preferences/technology preview?

Still occurring with Native Canvas disabled and Overscroll off.

It seems like PS is freaking out when I zoom in, goes all the way in, when you scroll out, it goes all the way out to 0.something % and you can't zoom in anymore, or the image is out of frame for the most part and I can't pan anymore.

How absolutely frustrating to get a new rig and BEGRUDGINGLY move up from the CS3 suite because I am a dinosaur and immediately run into this stupid problem with the new software. Can't get 10 minutes into a document without spacebar eventually locking up the program and forcing me to restart.

Use CS 4/5 if you still got it. Much faster & way more reliable, unless you need the selection tools, CR or the collaboration tools. I doubt you're using the "Neural FiIters". I'm using both, CC rarely. Saves you a lot of trouble

@Corniger thankyou unfortunately the good olde days of using CS4/5 are over for me, as working in house within a team all using the newer stuff with fast turnarounds needed loads of people cuts/social cards so the newer selection tools are a must. I'd rather they sack of generating things like the Neural Filters and get the basics correct. Cheers

That's what I said years ago. The foundations have become sort of volatile )and external software blows all the AI stuff out of the water - if you can pay for it). Fun with 60 GB PSBs etc..
On my machine, just adding a vector object from Illustrator consisting of 6 coloured squares hogs the system for 10, 20 seconds, so I can't imagine anyone can use this.
At least selection works OK now, I remember the massive crashes & workarounds from a couple of years ago. I just always feel like I don't have to spend 10000 bucks on a new machine for better 3D performance, in the meanwhile I someetimes feel I need it for Photoshop CC web images, and I suspect the cloud integration has a hand in some of the holdups.
