Photoshop 22.4.3 problem with saved file thumbnails

Mac OS 10.14.6, Photoshop CC 22.4.3, my saved Tiff files sometimes lack a thumbnail or show a selection as the thumbnail. I have thumbnails checked in Preferences>File handling? See attached screen shots, the jpg has the correct thumbnail, but the Tiff is displaying a saved selection channel as the thumbnail. Both files open and display normally in Photoshop. I was able to resave the tiff file after deleting the saved selection channel, but that cost me the selection. How can I correct this?
