I updated my Photoshop and LR this morning, LR is fine but PS is crashing on startup, saying 'The last time you opened Photoshop CC, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?' I have already trawled the forums, and tried a few suggestions (deleting the temp file in the autorecover file, Signing out of creative Cloud) but now at a total loss. Running a 2013 Retina MacBook.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
I've done a little investigating myself, since Adobe isn't really coming to the party on fixing this.
So, in C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Creative Cloud Libraries\LIBS is a file called librarylookupfile
This is the file that appears to be responsible for my crash at least (and looking at the dump data, everyone is having the same issue). Renaming this file (or just deleting it) resolves the issue for me.
I'm not sure what the significance of this file is, it just appears to contain a r

Great that got it to start. Holding down the shift key at startup did not work for me. Finding the two offending plugins was my solution. Moving all of the the plug-in items from the PS 2015 start-up folder and restarting PS 2015 got mine to start. Then moving the PS 2014 plug-ins to the PS 2015 plug-in folder one at a time to find the offending plug-ins was my solution and it did bring back functioning of the plug-ins that were OK. For the ones that were not OK the providers for those plug-ins had updates that did work in PS 2015.

Hey Ed_Engberg,
Which plugins folder did you move ? Would you please provide the path ?

I did not move the folder, only the files inside the folder to an empty folder on the desktop. For me (MS Win 7 Ultimate 64) it was "Local Disk (C:)/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CC 2015/Plug-ins." For the plug-ins in CC 2014 just substitute 2014 for 2015 in the search.

Thanks for that, but it didn't work for me .. Neither this nor any other solution mentioned by the fellows above.
Hope adobe can figure this issue out soon

Ed,
Thanks for the info - moving the plug-ins one at a time was the solution.

Well heck, just followed Pete Green's note about holding down the shift key while starting, leaving out the plug-ins, can't believe it, CC 2015 started right up with no problems. I had even renamed the plug-ins folder thinking it would not allow them. Looks like there are many compatibility issues with everyone concerning our previous plug-ins. Hopefully that can be overcome by Adobe in the near future.

I suggest the following which worked for me.
Open the Photoshop program folder and open the Plugins folder. Move all the plugins to a separate empty folder on your desktop. Be sure there are no files in the Plugins folder
Next restart Photoshop 2015. If it opens correctly replace the plugins, one by one, into the Photoshop Plugins folder and restart Photoshop 2015 after each individual replacement. When Photoshop 2015 stops starting correctly you have found the offending plugin(s).
After doing the above I found two plugins that caused my problem. Downloading updates for the offending programs that were created to solve Photoshop 2015 plugin problems and installing them solved the issues for me so I can use those plugins again.

I'm having the same problem, Photoshop CC 2015 was working fine until I came home last night and it crashed when I went to edit a file from Lightroom. The only thing that worked was to create a new user name in windows as described above. I uninstalled Photoshop and used the clean tool, then did the same with CC cloud desktop to no avail. I also can't find 2014 Photoshop CC on the cloud, it's not listed anywhere. I have wedding pictures to finish and don't want to create new settings and a new lightroom catalog on my SSD drive. If someone can help me get 2014 back I would really appreciate it! FYI, Photoshop CC 2015 is still working fine on my Laptop.... go figure??

I can only tell you what worked for me and because your laptop works I feel you have the same problem.
The crashing is due to PS add-ins that are not compatible with 2015CC. A simple diagnostic can help identify if this is the problem (as outlined in a previous post).
1. Move all add-ins from the PS 2015 program folder to a separate clean folder on your desktop. Do this with PS closed.
2. Restart PS 2015. If it starts without failing then you know that one of the add-ins is to blame. For me there were two add-ins that caused starting problems for PS 2015.
3. If PS 2015 fails to start with ALL add-ins moved from the add-ins folder then you have another problem, so good luck.
4. If PS 2015 starts properly with ALL add-ins moved from the add-ins folder you have found the problem and the next step is necessary.
5. Move add-ins back to the PS 2015 add-ins folder ONE at a time and restart PS 2015 after each move. Do this until you find the one(s) that cause PS 2015 to fail to start.
6. Contact the source of the problem add-in to see if they now have an update for their add-in for PS 2015.

Thanks for the reply! The only add in I'm using is the NIK collection, which I removed reinstalled Photoshop 2015 and still no success! I did find my installer for the 2014 build and it's working perfect, I think I'm going to stick with 2014 for a bit until I see a solution come in from Adobe or at least get the wedding shots done. FYI the NIK collection is working fine in Photoshop CC 2015 on my Laptop, crazy isn't it. Thanks again!

An interesting thing I've noticed is that if i launch Photoshop immediately after booting and while my desktop stuff is still loading, it gets further into launching before it crashes. Usually it gets to "initializing panels" then crashes, but once it even got as far as bringing up the main program interface then immediately stopped working. After a few seconds, it again stops at "Reading Color Settings". I wonder if something that launches at startup is interfering. I tried unplugging everything except the mouse, keyboard, and main monitor, but still the same behavior.

I'm not sure what the significance of this file is, it just appears to contain a reference to Fonts that I have used. I'm also not sure if it is truly corrupt or if there is an issue with the latest version of Photoshop when loading a valid version of this file.
Either way, try renaming that and see if it works for you.
Thanks.

That worked for me, vdrielc! Crazy how one little file could crash the whole program. When launching Photoshop 2015, it creates a new librarylookupfile, so I compared the two in notepad++. The old one just has a bunch of "NUL NUL NUL NUL" (not sure what they're supposed to be), but the new one has a line of actual readable information. The old one must have been corrupted or something. Nice detective skills!
