Hi,
I updated PS yesterday and everytjing was fine, but today suddenly I got big brush lags. With smoothing on or off, no difference.
Lag gets even worse while zooming above 50%.
I've restarted preferences and PC and nothing happens.
I'm losing half a day trying to figure it out and its really nervous situation. Any ideas how to fix it?
Windows 7, 16 GB RAM, GTX 970, Intel i5 4570
Try to set smoothing to 0% on normal brush and then back to healing brush
SOLVED THE PROBLEM
It looks like Adobe, if I'm not mistaken, added a new option in the 2019 version and by default, it's on. What worked for me is turning off "Enable Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale" under the Technology Preview preference. Let me know if this works for you guys.

Yeah...Agreed.
The only way I can get 2018 to work is if I torn off the Graphics processor and that still doesn't work great. The lag is worse with a bigger file...but it shouldn't be happening. I have another system with 2017 and it works fine.

Hello,
I had this same problem. I have found that if you have Smoothing or Dual Brush enabled in the Brush Settings, you will get a great deal of lag when zoomed in. Once these options were disabled, my brush acted normally.
Hope this helps your problem.

Same! This is ridiculous. We pay money for this product. I have a wacom at work and i've NEVER had this issue in any of my apps. So frustrating!

It is frustrating. Once I took smoothing to 0% the lag stopped for me.

I'm having issue myself a weird one actually lol. when ever I'm using the brush tool when I want to draw, it move up and down or left to right as if I'm using the grab tool It does the same thing with all the tools except for layers. I can't seem to figure out the problem, but when I install photoshop cc 2017 i don't have this issue at all. Do anybody know the reason why this problem occurring?

I think some users get confused about the SMOOTHING function and what lagging means.
My issue is not the smoothing - since I know that function from other softwares some years now (PS was embedding this function rather late)
My issue is the lag of the brush/cursor. Means: When I set the smoothing to 0% I still receive a lag on the brushstroke or a lag when I move a text element - that's my issue.
Let's all hope this will be fixed soon...

My problem is a little bit different, I've experienced no brush lagging, but BRUSH DOES NOT WORKING
Whenever I changed my brush, it doesn't appear for a few second or sometimes, a few minutes later, even set SMOOTHING to 0% doesn't solve the problem, Reset Preference to Quit doesn't work, either.
Just before the latest update, CC2018 still working perfectly, and now the bug keep annoy me for hours.
The lag (or whatever it is) occur in both Cintiq and ASUS as well, it happen with PTS only while the other graphic softwares still working normal.
More over, sometimes the brushes automatically change into Hand Tool and it moves the whole screen (not only my working file, but THE WHOLE PTS SCREEN), I dunno what to call it but imagine you're painting and the brush doesn't work, instead the cursor just pull your screen up and down meaninglessly.
If anyone know how to fix these problem, it would be a great help for not only me, but also people who suffer the same problem
Thank you.

Also, have such problem: brush lag on Photoshop 19.1.3 on Mac os
I was working and in a few seconds, my brush began to render slowly than I work. First, I thought that the reason is my tablet, but this problem exists even when I draw with mouse.
I Install the older version and that is good working.

My brush was working fine before zooming in. Then it just pans around. Even when i zoomed out, the brush is still not working.
I've tried all the solution here but still nothing is working. I can only make dots. Can't even have a proper brush stroke. But when i was typing this sentence and went back to PS to try again it was working properly. Then went and zoom in again and got back to original problem. It's like i have to go to another application for a few seconds before i can use the brush properly and can never zoom in again.
I have a Lenovo with Windows 10 Home, i7, 16GB, 2.8Ghz , TX 1050Ti, 4GB VRAM, Dual monitor, Wacom Intous Pro.
But when i was having that problem while using wacom pen, I tried the brush with my mouse and the brush works properly. Maybe a problem with Wacom? But i already switched off everything in my control panel>Pen & ink. And my wacom doesn't have any problem with other applications.
Hope this helps with any Adobe IT out there.
Please send help! I can not not zoom in when detailing. And i just have a really bad habit of zooming in every 30secs.

Hi
This is a different issue you are describing and has been answered numerous times over the last couple of days
You have two choices
1. Use notepad to create a text file and type in :
# Use WinTab
UseSystemStylus 0
2. Save the file as PSUserConfig.txt in the following location
C: > Users > Username > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 > Adobe Photoshop CC 2018 Settings
3. Go to the Wacom tablet properties and for Photoshop under Mapping uncheck "Use Windows Ink"
Or
1 Select everything inside the quotes here (don't include the quotes): “reg add HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pen /v LegacyPenInteractionModel /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f”
2 Copy it with Ctrl + C on the keyboard.
3 Type Windows Key + X (together), a menu will appear
4 Then type "A" on the keyboard. That will give you an elevated administrator PowerShell command prompt.
5 Paste the command you copied into that window with Ctrl + V
6 Hit "Enter" on the keyboard
7 Reboot

OH WOW!!!
The 1st option did it!
Thanks a lot Man!
That really helped.

After heaving an almost heart attack and enraging like a WOW Boss I tried the following version: Edit-Preferences-General - Reset Preferences on Quit. Restart your computer. It should work now.

It just took Photoshop SIX FULL MINUTES to "render" this small bit of brushwork on a large image for a layer mask. SIX MINUTES, on a computer with 8GB of RAM and a good graphics card. Adobe, I am getting more than a little tired of Adobe engineers using PAYING CUSTOMERS as lab rats for pre-release versions of products that we pay GOOD MONEY FOR. This is how some of us MAKE OUR LIVING - you are stealing from us. MAKE THIS RIGHT.

Photoshop had been working just fine for me until a few days ago, a bit of minor brush lag here and there, but never lasted long.
The last few days, though, it's become pretty much unusable. Tonight I booted it up, loaded a 3MB image, and tried to change my eraser size - it locked up. Shut it down via the task manager and tried again - same thing. Cleared my cache, renamed my preferences file, restarted my computer - now it won't load ANY images, gives me a "not enough memory" error (which is BS, I've had several images at once that were far bigger all loaded at the same time with no issues) or tells me something about not being able to parse JPEG format.
I have not changed a damn thing on my computer. Everything else I have works fine, including a video editor that uses FAR more memory and with which I edit much larger files.
Photoshop hasn't been the only option for a while, but if this doesn't get fixed, it's no longer the best one. PLEASE make this right or I'm unsubscribing.

I've been experiencing terrible brush lag while painting in photoshop. I'm using a Wacom intuos pro on a PC desktop and have tried over a dozen recommended fixes. The one thing that helped for about a week was switching to the 2017 version of photoshop cc. But the brush lag is now back. Is Adobe doing something about this???

For anyone that cares, I unchecked the TEXTURE option under the Brush settings and it instantly started to work as it should. I don't use this option, so I'm not going to tech-dive into why or anything. I'm sure someone in Adobe can look at this...

Actually, scrap that. Disabling Texture has done nothing, it has now gone back to the original issue after 1 day.

Mine only works if I turn brush smoothing off. If I have it on just a little bit it lags terribly!

I've recently been using my Huion for digital painting and it's been working fine up until 3 weeks ago where there is a lag that seems to stutter constantly in the middle of my stroke. It doesn't matter what brush I am using, I get the same effect. I went down to CC 2015 and that seemed to do the trick. But I lost all my brushes in the transfer process.

I've used so far Gimp, Sai Paint Tool, and Paintstorm, all of which work fantastically. I think I'm switching to Paintstorm if this doesn't get resolved.
Works Fine in MS paint too.

The same thing happened to me. I have 90+ layers, well-grouped, including clipped Layer Adjustments inside. When I drew on a layer inside the group, it's pretty laggy (with smoothing setting only 10%)
The quick workaround: Move the layer outside the group for a while, and draw on it, it works perfectly smooth, even at 100% Smoothing setting. It works well for me. After it's done, put it back inside the designated group (and the sluggish brushing will happen again there, lol). A little hassle, but that is an instant solution.

Last weekend also had the problem, after a new installation of PS CC 2018, that the Healing brush, the repair brush and area repair brush moved so slowly that it was impossible to work properly.
I've tried all the suggestions that were mentioned here, so smoothing disabled or set to 0, distance disabled, defaults reset, only one monitor instead of two connected - none of which really helped.
Then I came behind it - I have disabled the Windows Firewall and disabled the antivirus and browser protection - and lo and behold, everything in Photoshop now runs as it should!
So to all those who did not get along with the help here anyway, disable the antivirus and browser protection, add exceptions for Adobe programs and also for the photo archive in Lightroom and will test if that helps - with me it is now quite fast !

Hate to rehash an old thread but it looks like this problem reared it's ugly head again with the new Photoshop 2019. Only this time it works well only when the photo is zoomed up to 50%. Any where pass 50% that's where it lags and I've tried all of the suggestions here. My one and only work around is retouching the projects at no more than 50% zoom and its a real pain in the @$$.
