Photoshop CC Extremely Slow Startup

Photoshop CC 2014.2.2 is taking maybe 1 to 2 minutes after opening the application before I can open a file or create a new one. The menus just freeze and you can't interact. The mouse pointer is very slow and jerky across the screen. If I flip to another application it operates just fine so I don't think it's a memory issue.

I don't think I have made any changes to make this happen, just started out of the blue. Obnoxious.

Windows 8.1, 64bit.

I had the same sluggish 2017 (with updates as of 2017-06-19) on my computer. I uninstalled it and got back to 2015.5 and all is back to normal.

This worked for me. I had the exact same issue, went into my patterns as Nick suggested and deleted the list. I had a few dozen very large patterns. Removing them Photoshop went from startup time of 10+ minutes to less than 20 seconds.

Though I am thrilled to have a reasonable startup time, this does bring up an issue with patterns I have had for a long time. The process which we need to go through to check our patterns for repeats (Edit>Define Pattern>Switch to Pattern Fill>Make New Larger Canvas>Select your new Pattern from Dropdown>Apply Fill Pattern, is ridiculously long.

I had the same issues in Windows only. I'm on Windows and Mac.

FIXED IT by launching Photoshop while holding CTRL-ALT-SHIFT and clicked YES to delete or reset  Photoshop Settings.

Fully updated. Sighh I'm soo upset. It's embarrassing when my director or producer sits right next to me while we awkwardly wait for premiere and photoshop to load.

The point here is that the New Document dialogue is fat and slow. They negatives out way the positives. Even if you have a new machine, limit the most recent files, etc it doesn't help much. Like most software developers, there's this need to add more and more bloat to use every bit of horsepower available. How about we keep software simple as we upgrade hardware so we can take advantage of the brand new, expensive machine we just bought. Seems so obvious, yet so few take advantage of this opportunity.

Totally Agree! That's why I disabled the new start workspace/recent file at startup and use the legacy interface.

I hope this will be always an option available.

Simpler and lighter is better for for these things.

I have two laptops, exactly the same, and one is cloned from the other after setup. One laptop is normal, but the other one isn't. It takes 3:45 to load, I timed. Doesn't matter the file size, it could be a new blank file.

Edit: Actually deleting materials, 78MB seemed to work. This isn't a solution though because I use it every single time. This is also the only difference between computers, I installed Robert Ardill's very nice watercolor suite on this. The newer version has more materials and presets I think, but not sure.

Edit 2: I'm now down to 45 seconds, but file sizes are the same replaced. I would guess it's not the file size, but what is being loaded.

This is what happens when regressives undermine American business by promoting diversity initiatives and allowing the development of complex projects to be fragmented by outsourcing.  Adobe was too cheap to hire the best people internally, and kept losing money because all the third world people pirate, so we get stuck with a crappy subscription system for the rest of time.

Hi, today by mistake i think i found a solution (at least for me that i've tried all the steps in many forums), i was searching how to fix an Extensis Suitcase Fusion error with family typefaces and in their web, they recommend to erase all the .lst files that starts with "adobefnt" and after i did that. suddenly photoshop started normally without waiting 2 - 5 minutes to open a file or use any tool.

So the steps would be:

- Close all adobe CC programs

- Search all files, including external disks and system files, everything that starts with prefix "adobefnt" and ends with the .lst extension and erase it.

- Start Photoshop and done. no more SH**** waiting.

Hope that helps!

Adobe InDesign and Photoshop take minutes to load up on my system. Illustrator is not far behind. Even when the GUI is loaded, I have to wait for the menus and tools to become fully functional. Not that I mind too much, but it is noticeable when compared to earlier versions of Photoshop.

I've now got into the habit of starting the application, then going to put some coffee on, and returning in five minutes or so.

As I say, I don't mind so much, but it does seem unnecessarily slow. The only thing I dislike about the software is the fact that the library panels force users to use a cloud library, which is dead slow, and sometimes not even there. Imagine how much more usable that would be if it allowed you to cache the files locally!!

Jason, would you like 8 - 10 seconds startup on Photoshop CC ?

The problem as I see it is the 'reading preferences' component of the startup sequence.

Here's what I did to drop from 31 seconds to 8 seconds on startup.

  • First, I setup workspaces and created custom actions for my environment.
  • Second, programmed Cscript and .Bat files to move custom workspace and action files into required Photoshop folders prior to

        executing startup sequence.

  • Executed .Bat file and Photoshop now loads in 8 - seconds.  All actions and workspace are preserved and I'm good to go.

Note.. running off SSD and 8gb memory.

If interested I can give you CScipt and .Bat examples.

I started experiencing similar issues a few weeks ago. Photoshop would appear to freeze immediately after showing the workspace. Clicking the menu bar would do nothing. Extension panels remain empty. Can't even move the window. Other applications on my computer continue to work normally. After being completely stuck for about a minute, Photoshop would return back to normal. This is on Windows 10 x64, 2017 fall creators update.

None of the solutions offered in this thread made any difference. Finally, I went to the Device Manager to check my graphics card status. Selecting View > Show hidden devices revealed the Intel HD graphics device next to the AMD R9 280 that I actually use. Nothing is connected to the Intel graphics and I thought I had disabled the device. After uninstalling the device and one more reboot, Photoshop startup times are back to normal.

Hope this helps, Campo

I downloaded driver boost and on the tools section I clicked clean unplugged data devices, this seems to have helped with the startup time.

I think I got it figured out and this is definitely a bug... I worked on a file on an external hard drive. The drive has been removed since I worked on the file, but that file is still being referenced in the "Recent Files" list when Photoshop starts. Photoshop is looking for the file or files and cannot find it, and this is causing the slow startup.

I changed the Recent Files to 0 under Preferences-->File Handling and that solved the issue. Photoshop starts up as normal again.

Just bumped in to this.

I'm new to Adobe CC and just paid for a year. Downloaded Photoshop and some other apps. The first thing I did was startup Photoshop and OMG, my first impression of this software is really horrible. I Cant belief I just paid 725 euro's for this.!

Using a newly fresh - last night - installed Windows 10 1803, Intel i7, 16GB ram, NVidia GTX 780 on 3 monitors with 3 SSD disks.

I do have a lot of other software installed: Numerous development tools and languages (Python, Haxe, VS 2017, Java, etc (most tools are registered in the %PATH%)). Also I have Cubase with a decent VST library... Perhaps part of the problem?

@ungoul Would you be so kind to share your solution? (Put it in a zip and share it though some cloud storage perhaps?)

After setting up the performance preferences here: Optimize performance Photoshop CC the best I could do was disable the CC Libaries wherever possible, and make sure that Library window is removed from the GUI. Adobe really ruined the library feature by connecting it up to the cloud, especially in InDesign.

Other than that there's not a lot more to do. It takes ages to start the software - we have to live with it. I don't mind that to be honest, since we only use Photoshop for doing specialised work. What really bugs me with Adobe CC is Acrobat DC, which seems to take two minutes to open a PDF documents - and that's AFTER I have done all the tricks to speed it up!

Well on my system it is fixed now. It seems to be caused by the download manager: "Adobe Creative Cloud". When its busy downloading/installing/updating the problem occurs. When it was finished i did a reboot and all was fixed. Also I've unchecked: Edit->Preference->General "Show ''Start'' Workspace...".

I have all the software I initially want to use installed now: Ps, An, Ai, Pr..

Photoshop starts in 5 seconds now,  which is pretty nice!

I work with Photoshop on a regular basis, and use it with students in web development. I have NEVER been able to start it in 5 seconds or anything close to that, nor has any student I know. It takes between 1 to 3 MINUTES before it becomes usable.

I have 16GB and an i7 also. The video card is less than yours but shouldn't affect start time. I also have Adobe Creative Cloud disabled (so it does not start when Windows starts).

Perhaps there are some workaround hacks as ungoal mentioned, or by experimenting with preferences, but in my opinion this should be work by default. We should not need to fiddle around like this.

I absolutely agree with you... And honestly the first time I started up I was shocked by the poor startup performance. Especially for the price tag. But now It really starts in 5-8 sec, and I am a happy user!

Also I have not disabled "Adobe Creative Cloud". The problem happend when I started Photoshop while "Adobe Creative Cloud" was installing/updating Apps.

Dit you try this:

  1. Re-enable "Adobe Creative Cloud" and make sure all apps are up to date..and don't disable it afterwards!
  2. Start Photoshop by double clicking the icon and then quickly press CTRL-ALT-SHIFT to delete the settings file (be aware you are deleting your Photoshop settings with this)
  3. uncheck: Edit->Preference->General "Show ''Start'' Workspace......."
  4. Reboot
  5. Start Photoshop!

For me, that dit the trick!

I see that this is an old thread but it popped up when I googled "photoshop taking a long time to start up".  None of the above things worked for me.  I just installed photoshop on a brand new pc and it was taking about 3 minutes to start up.  I realized that I was never prompted to install Adobe AIR during this installation (which has been typical in my experience).  I went to the website, downloaded it, and now Photoshop starts up in less than five seconds.  Yay!
