Photoshop CC - refine edge tool has suddenly stopped working

Note: When I wrote this post, I was originally using Photoshop CC (2017).

I've just updated to Photoshop CC (2018) but the problem is still there.

Hi everyone,

I have been using the Refine Edge tool for months with no problems.

Yesterday (January 2018) it suddenly stopped working.

One minute it was working, the next minute it wasn't.

No Adobe updates, no computer hardware updates or changes, no obvious reason why anything would have changed.

Here are some screenshots:

1. Firstly, I select the man with the Quick Selection tool, which shows up the dotted outline of the selected area (no problems there)

2. I click on "Select and Mask" which shows the masked area (no problems there)

3. But when I try to use the Refine Edge tool around the man's hair, the tool doesn't respond.

It used to respond but doesn't anymore.

4. Then when I click "ok" to close the Select and Mask window, the selection has completely disappeared!

No more dotted outline of the selected area.

Anyone have any ideas of what has gone wrong and how I can fix this??

Note: I'm working on a Macbook Air (2014) with High Sierra.

Processor: 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB

Cheers,

Bex

Your screenshot shows that you have "Show original" checked inside select and mask (top right). That shows the selection as you opened Select and Mask.

Press P to turn it off and see the impact of refine edge

For the output issues - check your output settings in Select and Mask

Thanks Dave, that worked!

I guess that means that my Photoshop updated and changed my default settings without me realising it.

Will keep an eye out for that in the future ...

Cheers,

Bex
