Photoshop CC - Slight lag

I've never had a problem with the performance of any Adobe program to date. I've been using CS6 since it was released and on my current computer, Photoshop CS6 was very responsive. I just installed Photoshop CC and was immediately shocked at the slight lag that's present with absolutely everything I do. I've heard reports with previous versions that there was a lag with the brush tool, never personally experienced it but I am seeing it now.

Besides the brush tool, I've also noticed the same 1/2 - 1 second lag when making a selection, zooming, erasing or pretty much any other tool. The odd thing is that it seems to be happening for non-intensive things as well. Even on small documents, if I hold the spacebar and drag with my mouse to pan, there's a 1/2 second delay before the pan starts, then once it gets going it's business as usual.

It seems like a dumb little issue, but when you're trying to work quickly and you're moving around a lot, having a delay before any/every action gets annoying really quickly.

Photoshop only sees the GeForce GTX 660.

I don't see any problems in that listing but an Adobe person would have to say for sure whether a dual GPU configuration with two different cards is well-supported.

Nice workstation, by the way.  You have your monitors set up just like I do - 2560 x 1600 panel in the middle, with two 1200 x 1600 ears on the sides.

Oh, and one other question:  Have you tried running Photoshop CC (2014)?  I see you're running 14.2.1, the older version.

Hmm i have no idea why does it say 14.2.1. I installed it just 2 months ago form AdobeCC application so it is version from 2014 . What's the latest version (i'll go try update it on my AdobeCC account if there is something newer - what version should it be ?).

As for machine Yes It's Dual Xeons with 3 monitors 20" pivot +30" + 20" pivot which gives 4960*1600 in total.

CC 2014 is a very disappointing upgrade. Drag and zoom have a 1-2 second delay. Does anyone have a solution?

Have you made sure your system software is up to date?

Choose Help - System Info, copy the data, and post it here.  Perhaps someone will be able to spot something amiss and give you specific things to try to correct it.

Do you have a tablet?  I've been starting to develop a theory that maybe tablet-mouse interaction may cause sluggishness.  I only have a mouse and find Photoshop CC 2014 quite fast.

Hi Noel,

Thanks for the reply... I just reverted back to CS6, and everything is back to normal. Bummer! I always prefer to use the latest and greatest, so I'd love to get CC 2014 working.  Anyway, here's my system info coming out of CS6 (this was clean install), and no, I'm not using a tablet. I disabled that a long time ago. However, I don't know if my update to CC 2014 carried over my my Canon scanner plug-in (i.e. an installed TWAIN device).

The System Info from the malfunctioning version might have been more useful.

Do you still have both of them installed?

Really I have the same delays and cursor freezing effects using all the UI elements and operating with layers (menus, tools, ALL movements) in PS CC 2014. Really annoying and slowing all the work process.

PS CC 2014 is completely unsuitable for fast working

Already tried to make some changes in Preferences > Performance. Nothing helped.

Also tried to turn off the new fast guides and extras. That had a small effect on performance. But still the last PS update is too slow comparing with previous versions. =(

I've got Win8, 24GB, 3.22GHz x 4, SSD, 64-bit.

Can I solve the problem or downgrade to last PS CC version?

I've had the exact same issues with Ps CC since I bought it with a slight lag on everything from zooming to lasso-tool, updating my videocard drivers this morning seems to have fixed it though.

Well, that was premature

lag is back.

Interesting observation though, when I first start Photoshop CC everything works, when I've been doing stuff on my secondary monitor for a while and/or in another window on my primary seem to be when the lagging starts.

Edit: Restarting PS removes the lag again, for a while.

"Slight lag" is the understatement of the century. Ever since CC 2014 was installed, Photoshop is unusable. I'm on Windows 7 x64 running on a top-tier i7 CPU w/ 16 Go RAM and a discrete GPU. It's become impossible to perform even the most basic image manipulation.

I'm actually experiencing two issues that could easily be conflated:

1) Lag when performing most operations. When the tools do work, they exhibit a slight delay. It takes half a second to for a marquee selection to become visible, or for a paint brush click to show, etc.

2) What some have described as a "freezing effect": Mouse clicks are getting "interrupted" so most operations never get executed. If I start a paint brush operation by clicking the mouse, holding down the mouse button and moving the cursor, Photoshop cancels the operation almost instantly. Instead of seeing a line where I drew one, I just see a dot where I started the operation. If I perform a rectangular marquee selection, it never completes (and there is no selection) unless I do "mouse down - move cursor - mouse up" all within a fraction of a second. Finally, this problem is not limited to the tools, but is reproducible all over the UI. For instance, it's no longer possible to browse the application menus while holding the left button clicked. Usually you can click down on say "File" (File menu opens), hold the mouse button pressed, move the cursor over to "Edit", "Image", "Layer" etc which would cause those menus to open. Now, the File menu remains open just as if I had released the mouse button after having clicked on it.

That's about as good of a description as I can give, but you can contact me by email if your engineers need additional details.

Honestly guys, this is unacceptable. I'm paying good money for this software and I expect it to work when I need it to. There's no excuse for pushing out automatic updates that completely break all functionality.

What's interesting is the complete lack of a pattern with this issue...  I've never seen anything on my system that could remotely be called lag with this version.  Others have seen it come and go, and still others can't get rid of it.

I can't help but think that the current implementation triggers something in only some display or mouse drivers that causes the delay.  JC B, what video card do you have?  What display driver version?  Do you have a tablet?

At this point, though a fair number of folks are reporting these sluggishness / lag type issues here on the forum, it's possible Adobe feels it's only a minority of users overall who have them.  Thus, those of you who do have the issue need to be especially specific and thorough in your reports, in order to make it as likely as possible for an engineer to reproduce it.  That may include posting all your System Info, and describing in detail very specific timing descriptions of particular operations, such as JC B has done above.

Also, some of the above descriptions make me wonder whether disk I/O operations may be affecting the interactivity of the display.

For those of you experiencing sluggishness / lag, do you see any correlation to the disk activity light on your system?  Note that Photoshop opens some fairly large temporary files even before they're needed to support going virtual.

Hi Noel, I'm running a Radeon HD 5450 with the latest official driver from AMD (14.100.0.0). I uninstalled the driver to revert back to the Windows 7 defaults, and the problem persisted. Additionally, I unchecked "Use Graphics Processor" in Photoshop Settings > Performance to no avail.

A couple more details that may be pertinent:

1) My system is running on a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD so it's doubtful that disk activity is part of the issue, at least for me.

2) Photoshop CC (pre-2014, v14.2.1) is still installed, and now exhibits the exact same behavior as Photoshop CC 2014.

3) Sometimes the issue disappears entirely for a few seconds. Tools work correctly (albeit with a slight lag) and mouse input is responsive. After I switch tools a couple of times though, the bad behavior reappears and Photoshop becomes unusable again. This has happened once on application start, and twice after I had it minimized for about a minute or so.

Hope this helps.

I use the Catalyst 14.4 release (aka 14.100.0.0) myself, though with an ATI Radeon HD 7850, and I find that version good for Photoshop.

Do you have a tablet?  I've been wondering for a while if a tablet / mouse interaction could be a possibility.

I do not have a tablet.

Here is a screencast of the problem in action:

I can't help, looking at that video, but think that you must have an accessibility option or something enabled that's causing the mouse to send different events than what's typical.

You have a fairly small display...  Is this a laptop?  If so, is there any touchpad-specific software running?

It's a desktop. I have a 24" LCD at 1920x1200 and a 20" LCD at 1680x1050. There is no touchpad or mouse-specific software running. No accessibility options enabled, either.

Remember that a) it was working fine prior to the latest CC 2014 update -- it worked fine for years, and b) the problem goes away for a little while from time to time, despite zero changes in configuration/environment.

(Edit: I had purposefully recorded just a part of the screen so as to cut down on file size.)

Thanks!

Well, at this point I'm out of ideas as to what could cause what you're seeing.

Very basic fallback:  Have you tried resetting Photoshop's preferences to defaults?

I did, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestions.

Here is another video that illustrates the lag issue. I draw lines with the paintbrush very quickly and Photoshop just cannot keep up. You can see that it takes 5-8 seconds after I stop moving the mouse for stuff to finish drawing on screen.

http://screencast.com/t/HMw9modJp

Also included in that video is some drawing with the mouse in MS Paint so you can see how responsive Photoshop used to be.

Thanks again.

The same problems occurs with the new Elements13. For me this is unacceptable, and ask the Developers with a sufficient cure ASAP. This programs are expensive, and thanyou can expect a good product, and/or good after sales. SO, I LIKE TO SEE A FAST AND PERMANENT SOLUTION ON THIS PROBLEMS.
