Photoshop completely broken

I am finding with the last two, or is it three, updates of PS, when I open a picture, be it straight into PS or a raw image via ACR, the canvas is split into four equal segments (1/4 rectangles) with the picture split between them, sometimes white rectangles, sometimes black ones.

If I hit CMD + J to duplicate the layer, the new layer is the picture as should be, CMD + E to merge the two layers and we are good to go.

With the latest update, it doesn't do this quite so often, but if using the spot healing brush, it will work for three or four strokes, then it draws the black line over the screen and freezes, I'm left with a black smudge on the screen. If I go to the next area to spot heal it works, but the previous one is still a black smudge on the screen. Then 3 or 4 more spot healing strokes, it freezes again... Again CMD + J to duplicate the layer and it appears the spot healing brush has worked, the black smudges go away and the tool has done it's job. Again CMD + E to merge layers and carry on.

Not difficult to carry on working, but rather a pain in the derriere !

Have now installed version 23.5.5 and that seems to function as it should, will have to do more testing...

@Normski4ash would it be possible to share a screenshot of what you are seeing?  

 

Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere: 

Restore your preferences using this manual method:  

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually  

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

 

 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System

Does going to Technology Previews > and checking Deactivate Native Canvas make a difference to the issue you are seeing?

The picture is a beastie that landed on my window, all the specs are dried rain. In the latest PS for 2023 version, getting rid of all the rain spots gave me 12 freezes. Open same image in 2022 version of PS, and it did the whole picture with no freezes, closed it without saving, reopened it and did it again, no freezes !

@jane-e @davescm be aware with Mac OS Ventura "preferences" no longer exists. They've renamed the menu "Settings" in both Photoshop and Apple System Settings.

That appears to have worked, binning the settings and re starting. 

Is it worth putting things back one at a time to see which one was faulty ? Or just thank you for sorting it...

Glad to hear @Normski4ash that is up to each customer as to how many custom settings they have created.  If you are the type of person that would like to know, yes, that is really the only way to see what was corrupt.
