Photoshop Crashes Using Nvidia 3070 for GPU Acceleration
I have been experiencing lots of crashes in Photoshop and ACR when enabling GPU acceleration. The problem has persisted across the past few releases (going back several months at least) and the only solution I have found so far is disabling GPU usage in the programs. However, with the latest release I saw a notification in ACR that it was going to require a GPU in the near future so I want to get this fixed. The problem appears on my Windows desktop but not my 2021 MacBook Pro when editing the exact same files. In ACR, the crash usually happens when I have multiple high resolution raw files open. The most common precursor to the crash is using the masking tools, but it can happen even with less complicated edits. In Photoshop, it can happen even with a small number of files open.
My GPU is an Nvidia RTX 3070 Founder's Edition where I am and have always been running the latest studio driver (currently 531.61). It passes the Adobe GPU Compatibility check. My other components are an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and 64GB of DDR4 3600 MHz RAM (I have allowed 85% RAM usage in PS and it does not appear to be a bottleneck). I am running the latest version of Windows 10 (currently 22H2 19045.2846). Aside from disabling the GPU, I have tried the following:
- Reset preferences
- Set ACR cache to up to 100GB on a separate M.2 SSD scratch disk
- Followed the steps on the Photoshop GPU Troubleshooting page (https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html) including
- Trying Cache Levels of 4 and 6
- Enabling and disabling Open CL
- Adding Photoshop.exe and sniffer.exe in the Manage 3D settings of the Nvidia Control Panel
I can disable the GPU for now, but I can't see why I shouldn't be able to use a high end card and get the benefit of the investment. Thanks for any help.
