Photoshop crashes using Quick Selection tool

Photoshop keeps crashing when I use the Quick Selection tool.  I have clicked through the error message checking off the various suggestions:  restarted PS and my computer; made sure I have current PS version (25.1); reset Preferences (so "more stable" is selected instead of "faster" for image processsing); I have  also followed the steps below re the graphics driver.  

1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose the NVIDIA control panel.
2. Click Manage 3D settings.
3. Click Program Settings and add Photoshop.exe and sniffer.exe. Change the Preferred graphics processor to High-performance NVIDIA processor.

I'm also pasting the Sytem Info below in case trhat's helpful.  What's not clear to me is if the I have the latest NVDIA graphics driver installed.  My GPU processor is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.  When I go to NVIDIA that one is not avaialble; rather the options are 1650 Ti and 1660 Ti.  I wonder if I should install one of those.  Any help would be appreciated.  (It's frustrating NVIDIA doesn't prompt me to install the current driver or otherwise identify if mine is outdated).  Thanks.

@bartonlew 1. Turn off hyperthreading in the NVIDIA controls. 

2. Make sure you are using Studio drivers, not gaming.

3. Update your graphics card driver - 5 mo out of date. 

4. Then try resetting your preferences manually:

Thanks..  NVIDIA has an app where you update your drivers.  I fogto that and did not have it installed.  Drivers have been updated.  But re your #s 1 and 2 - where is hyperthreading?  In the NVIDIA Control Panel somehwere?  I could not find it.  Also where do you select Studio drivers as you direct - in the Control Panel?  I selected Hi-performance NVIDIA Processor in Manage 3D settings but you may be talking about something else.  Thanks.

Hyperthreading is the high performance setting. Studio drivers are physically different downloads than gaming.

Thanks.  Just got off the phone with NVIDIA.  They say the driver upgrade is a software update and that the graphics processor is hardware, which version that I have is mostly incompatible with the current version of Photoshop, 25.1.   They say the driver update only does so much to help.  And that I bascially need a processor upgrade, but it's not possible to do that in a laptop because, unlike a desktop, the processsor is soldered onto the motherboard.  They suggest working with an older version of Photoshop, going back to 2020.  I clicked on the Studio driver link you sent while on the phone with this guy and got an "unconfirmed" file type in my Downloads folder.  Then he started explaining the above.  Now I check my Downloads folder and the driver is in there.  I'll install it.  Meanwhile, do you have any thoughts on the above?  Many thanks.

Your GPU should work with current Photoshop builds. The tech is correct the driver updates are software updates and will help with PS compatibility. I wouldn't see a new to update the hardware (yet).

Thanks.  I installed the Studio driver and was struck by how much faster my computer is running.  I went to the same file to replicate the error and it occurred again (PS crashing when I use the Quick Selection tool after making a fairly large selection).  What I had not yet done from your instructions above was reset Preferences manually.  Do I do this by clicking on Reset Preferences on Quit as shown in the dialog box below?

Also, can you please clarify:  you said "Hyperthreading is the high performance setting."  Does this mean this is not the setting I want?  And if so, what instead:  "Auto-Select"?  Thank you.

One other option is under Image Processing change the settings to More Stable.

Thanks.  I had already done that (selected More Stable).  I saw that you had suppleid a link for resetting Preferences and so I also did that.  Now I've checked off all the boxes (except that I'm still not sure if I should have high performance setting selected in the NVIDIA control panel but I do).  PS is still crashing at the same place so what I may do is split the selection in half (do it in 2 stages).  I beleive there is a known issue with PS crashing using this feature so I may research it more.  But it's not happening in any other instance than this one so the splitting may be an acceptable workaround for this particular situation.

The problem is now worse.  I am barely able to use the Quick Selection tool without PS crashing.  Very frustrating.

Interesting.  This seems to have worked.  The document no longer crashes when making the quick selection.  Which begs this question:  if the processor is hard wired, what does selecting Older GPU achieve?  It is not, obviously, replacing the processor, since that would be a physical operation which, in any case, is not possible on a laptop, or that's what I have been told.  On the other hand, the graphics driver is software which, when updated, does not address the incompatability issues of the processor.  So my assumption is that Older GPU is selecting an older driver which is compatible with the processor, and that's why there is no crashing.  Is that right?  On a related note, I get the error message below when and only when I unplug my laptop and connect it to my Epson Surecolor printer.  Why would I get the message about driver incompatability only when I am trying to print?  Thanks.
