After my desktop (Windows 10) motherboard and processor were replaced, InDesign CS6 still works fine, but (apart from a very annoying problem re-registering Acrobat, now fixed by Adobe with a more recent version) the other serious problem I am left with is that Photoshop CS6, while it opens, and I can create a new canvas, paste an image into it, crop it, move it etc, and even "merge visible" and SAVE the psd file, but when I try to PASTE A SECOND IMAGE ONTO THAT CANVAS (which sometimes works and sometimes crashes) and (if it hasn't crashed already) then CROP, it crashes, not just out of the file, but out of Photoshop. It's as if I never turned the program on - except that I can open the saved psd file.
I uninstalled Photoshop - there were two CS6 listed but the one that wasn't annotated (64X ?) was paled (grayed) out and I uninstalled both - then reinstalled it from a link Adobe sent me in 2021 (when I also had major problems getting parts of CS6 running after hardware replacements).
This unexpected and complete crash out of the program makes Photoshop extremely difficult and frustrating to work with.
Any advice on how to fix this and/or information about why the possible reason for it crashing would be appreciated.
The motherboard I believe is the same model as my old one.
I would try an install of the latest Navidia drivers for your GT 710 card
Here's a screenshot of what to enter in the different fields to get the graphics driver for your GT 710.
Then click on Start Search and you'll get the Driver Results of which you want the first one listed.
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/
You click on the different fields a chose from a drop down list
You download the driver to your computer then double click on it to to run the installer.
Where it says Get Download
It's vital that you DO find out the version of the driver you are running before the update, don't just guess, get the exact number. It's entirely possible that the update will make things much worse, and you need to know where to go back to.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/
p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post if it helps you get responses.

I would do a manual reset of the photoshop cs6 preferences by going to
C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6
and trashing the
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings folder
If you have any custom Workspaces in the Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings folder , remove
those first so you can put them back after the reset.
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html
Another thing you want to do is from within photoshop cs6 go to Help>Updates and install any available updates.

Thanks Jeff
It han't fixed the issue. I deleted that folder (no custom workspaces to worry about), and updated CS6, but there were no updates for the Photoshop module.
After all that was complete, I opened Photoshop CS6, opened the psd file I was trying to work on, cropped it successfully, saved it, opened a similar psd file that I needed to copy one part of the image from, copied that merged section, pasted it onto the first file, then realised the copied bit need Transform/Scaling, and as soon as I hit "Scale", Photoshop disappeared without trace as if it had never been opened.

Jeff
Further to my reply, I've now repeated the opening of the two psd files (neither of which were available from "Open recent"), copy merged the desired part of the second image, pasted it ont the first image and saved. With the pasted layer highlight, selected Transform / Scale and immediately the program disappears. Starting Photoshop again, I still don't see the first image in "Open Recent". When I open that image, the layer with the copied image is still there. Instead of using "Transform" I decided to try "Free Transform", which allowed me to rescale the copied bit and move it into place, and even use the tick to apply the transformation, but then trying to save that file makes the program vanish. Doing all that again allowed to rescale the copied bit in its default paste location and SAVE the file, but as soon as I try to move the scaled bit, the program vanishes. Doing that again, it vanished at the save stage, and anyhow, the file on opening did NOT have the rescale applied. It's as if some sadist is sitting on the other end there in San Jose taking great delight in preventing me being able to complete the Rotary Annual Report. "Hee heee hee, what trick can I play this time ... "

Could it be a Java / Javascript problem? I know nothing about Java except that it has occasionally caused annoying and time-consuming problems for the best part of 20 years in both work and home environments, all on Windows systems. This was suggested as a cause of 2017 problem with an Apple OS. The problem seesm similar or identical.

Do you have a separate Graphics Card or are you using the motherboard onboard (intergrated GPU) graphics?
If you have a separate graphics card, did you disable the onboard graphics in your computers bios?

It might help also if in photoshop cs6 you go to Help>System Info and paste the contents here on the forum.

I opened the case to look at what must be the graphics card, with the HDMI port, and all I can see is the brand ASUS. I wonder if there's a discrepancy between it and the NVIDEA listed in that dxdiag file?

I would try an install of the latest Navidia drivers for your GT 710 card

I would if I could, but this company (like many others) has no clue how to design a Customer Relations Management (CRM) interface that works for ALL its customers, including non-experts and people NOT fixated on the intricate details of their graphics card. There is no obvious category for the GeForce GT 710 card, either in their current list or their legacy list, and the closest to it is three items for Notebooks, which are not correct.
I finally found, via non-working chat, a way of messaging them, and sent this:
"Apparently my driver for GeForce GT 710 graphics card is defective or outdated, yet in your driver download page, it appears to be impossible to find the product, and I cannot find out what Series it belongs to, so I cannot find your driver.
You also make it extremely difficult to obtain this information - it has taken a long and frustrating process to find this page."
No further ahead at this juncture.
Thanks for your continued attention and help - it is much appreciated.

In that message to Asus, I continued:
"Please email the driver for NVIDIA GeForce GT 710 for my system :
Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 19045) (19041.vb_release.191206-1406)
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-10100 CPU @ 3.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 16384MB RAM
or if it's too large, please send the DIRECT LINK so I don't have to navigate through a system that's impossible to navigate though."
For the record, so I can find it again, my reference number for follow up: #230612-000780 .

Here's a screenshot of what to enter in the different fields to get the graphics driver for your GT 710.
Then click on Start Search and you'll get the Driver Results of which you want the first one listed.

Jeff
Good luck finding what Series the GeForce GT 710 is in - and their so-called CRM architect has ensured that you cannot get anything without knowing that and where to to find it. Putting the product name into a search is NOT possible.

You click on the different fields a chose from a drop down list

Thanks Jeff
I see you've highlighted a "700 series" where I've now found the product listed. Perhaps it seems obvious that I should have looked there, but I was confused by the GT.
This is what they show there - I'll have to assume that this is actually a driver, and then work out how to go about replacing the existing one with it (at present I have no idea) :

It's vital that you DO find out the version of the driver you are running before the update, don't just guess, get the exact number. It's entirely possible that the update will make things much worse, and you need to know where to go back to.

Google tells me to run Device Manager, but if I right click on the Window and select Run and paste Device Manager, it doesn't find it and run it. So I'd appreciatea stepwise procedure for determining the version of my driver.
