Photoshop does not load with different monitors setup (Dual screens instread of 3)

Community Beginner ,

Hello everyone,

I'm encountering an issue with Photoshop on my Windows 10 setup. At work, I use three screens without any problems. However, at home, where I only have a dual-screen setup, Photoshop doesn’t fully load. The app appears as active in the taskbar, but when I hover over its icon, the preview window is empty, and the application window doesn’t appear on either screen. I’ve tried ending the Photoshop process and restarting it, but the issue persists. It seems as if Photoshop is linked to a specific screen setup, and it’s not adjusting when I switch to the dual-screen configuration. The only solution I see is to ensure that I move Photoshop to my laptop’s screen at the office before leaving.

Does anyone have any tips to solve this?

Best,
Gilles

@Gilles32612649vuja so it’s the same laptop sometimes connected at work, sometimes at home?

can you not quit Photoshop before unplugging those multiple displays and taking the laptop home, then restart Photoshop with the 2 displays connected only? It should settle itself that way

If that doesn't help have you tried the options under Photoshop's 'view' menu (if you can see the menu that ios).

I hope this helps

Hello Neil,

Thank you for your answer; yes, it's the same laptop.

I will try that! I don't have the issue today, I'm working from home and I made sure to move Photoshop to the right screen before leaving yesterday at the office.

That being said, when the issue occurs, I don't have access to Photoshop at all and therefore, I cannot see the view menu. I guess you were thinking about options such as "fit on screen" etc.. ?

Check your display assignment order in Windows. Which is display 1, 2 and 3.

If Photoshop opens on display 3 at work, and you then take the laptop home and there is no display 3, this happens. Any application or window will open wherever it was last closed. That's hard wired in Windows.

Since this is a laptop, I assume that will always be display 1. The other two are ordered as they are connected to the GPU.

Indeed! Since it is an open space, people have different desks everyday and I've already noticed that sometimes people change the order of screens, for an unknown reason. As far as I remember, Photoshop is never on the 3rd screen, always on the screen in the center, which should be display 2. So this issue likely happens on days when someone changes the display order and the center screen becomes display 3. I guess this is the explanation because I almost never used the 3rd screen for Photoshop.
But if I do not pay attention and I leave the office with Photoshop on display 3 (that I expect to be display 2), there is absolutely no way to force photoshop to restart on the display 1? Without a 3rd screen, I'm potentially stuck forever.

yes I was.

I believe the setting you decide upon as to 'which screen is which' will be particular to YOUR laptop. I am sure that someone else using those 3 screens cannot change a setting you made on your copy of Windows. The screens themselves won't "know" and remember what another user has set

I hope this helps

I guess you're right, that would make sense. I will investigate further and see how I can replicate (or not) this.
In any case, if someone has a workaround to force an app to restart on the original display, I'm interested.

I'll keep searching and see if I can find anything.

What happens if you reset (or switch) the active workspace?

I checked the display settings but I could only switch the order of displays 1 and 2 while at home (I wanted to check if I ever could switch display 2 to 3 without a 3rd screen but no, but it makes sense haha), but I did not try to switch between 1 and 2. I will if the issue happens again. I also tried to disconnect my second screen but nothing changed for Photoshop (this should reset the configuration and bring everything to the laptop screen, right?).

The strange thing is, while this issue happens at home, Photoshop is the only application that has a problem; all the other apps return to display 1 without any issues. As you can see in my picture, I frequently use the third screen for texts, emails, and other tasks.
