Photoshop is taking long time to save files

It seems to be taking a really long time for Photoshop to finish saving a photo with actions applied. It never used to take more than a few seconds to save, but recently it is taking several minutes or longer to save back to Lightroom and gets stuck at like 98% saved. Would it be best to just re-install photoshop?

Hi There,

Sorry to hear about long saving times of Photoshop, could you please let us know the exact version of Photoshop you're working with?

Could you please try resetting the preferences of Photoshop and let us know if it helps with the issue? https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Note: Make sure that you back up all your custom presets, brushes and actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences. Migrate presets, actions, and settings

Regards,
Sahil

I am working on Photoshop CC 2019

I tried resetting preferences. Still having the same issue.

I re-installed Photoshop, did not help.

I pull in a photo from Lightroom. Add some actions and minor 'fixes' and then save the file to pop back over to Lightroom. It saves quickly all the way up until 98% saved. Then it gets stuck there for like 10 minutes or more.

Super frustrating and slowing me up on finishing my sessions.

Having the same issue. It started a couple of weeks ago out of nowhere. I have not changed anything in my workflow. Most of the time I have to "Force Quit" Photoshop and then restart my computer.

So I think I figured it out. I am running MacOs and I was saving the files to an external that I shared with a Windows PC. So the external was formatted to Fat32 so it could be used on both. When i formatted the external to Journaled(MacOS), my files were able to save perfectly fine.

Thats a known issue with Catalina and Mojave OS. Mac started upping the security restrictions and it buggered external drives that were not Mac formatted. Glad you were able to resolve.

Me too.  Has happened just recently.  I do have some rather large Photoshop or Large Document files at times but the save time was never this slow.  Using Ventura 13.3.1

What kind of drive are you saving to? Saving directly to an external drive is not recommended/unsupported and unpredictable problems may occur due to changed protocols, changed drivers etc.

Save locally, then copy over.

OK, then you need to give us some specifics so we know what to compare with.

Do you have PSD/PSB compression enabled? That has a huge impact on save times, and the bigger the file is, the more noticeable the time difference. For really big files, it can be 4-10x. Layers take longer to compress than flat files.

What is the pixel size, number of layers, any smart objects? What is the size of the saved PSD/PSB?

Many thanks for your reply D Fosse.

I have the information you requested but I want to reiterate that this problem has only been occurring for the last couple of weeks or so.  (Has there been an update in that time?)  Large files have previously been slow of course, (maybe up to 10 secs?), but not nearly as bad as at present.

These are 3 examples of my files:

File 1:

LDF

933.3MB

196 layers

11 groups

Inc. Smart Objects

File 2:

PSD

224.4MB

223 layers

29 groups

No Smart Objects

File 3:

PSD

437.6MB

17 layers

1 Smart Object

Opening times vary but can be as long as 12 secs

Closing times vary but can be as long as 27 secs

I don’t have PSD/PSB compression enabled.  Firstly, I don’t know how to do that, secondly, I have never had the need to do that and thirdly, I would be wary of compression degrading files.

All my images are 300dpi

Many thanks, Heather

If you don't know, then PSD/PSB compression is on. It's in Preferences, and it's on by default. You have to go in and uncheck that to turn compression off.

Compressing layers takes a lot of time. So if you have many layers, the difference in save times will probably be quite dramatic.
