Photoshop lags and freezes after 8 image edits.

Hi.  I am so frustrated and ready to give up on Adobe  I have used LR and PS together to edit my photos for more than a decade.  For years I used my 2011 iMac and it was wonderful.  That iMac died last summer and I bought a 2017 model of the same computer.  I downloaded the latest versions of LR and PS and installed them (I had not updated these programs on my old iMac in over a year).  I cannot use the latest versions on this new computer for more than about 8 image edits before the lag is so bad I have to force quit and reopen PS.

My workflow is this:  Apply LR edits and choose 4 or 5 photos to take into PS.  I run a blank layer to clone out problems.  Then i usually run a series of self made actions to brighten etc.  Then I flatten and close.  This works for the first set of photos.  Then I go back into LR, select my next 4 or 5 photos and take them into PS.  Here is when the issues begin.  The clone/heal tool starts to lag and often freezes.  I have found if I click on the layer panel about 30 seconds after it freezes, it will unfreeze.  By the 4th picture in the group there is a several second delay and I can't heal well because I can't see what I am doing while I am trying to do it.  Now when I try to flatten all images it takes a very long time.  When I try to run actions on all my images it is painfully slow. It is all I can do to get though those 4 images.  Saving takes well over 15 seconds per image.  At this point I try to close PS.  It more often than not won't close and I have to choose Force Quit.  I reopen it and start the whole 8 images process again.  Sigh.

My iMac has the standard specs:

Display

  • 21.5-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display
  • 1920‑by‑1080 resolution with support for millions of colors

Processor

  • 2.3GHz
2.3GHz dual‑core Intel Core i5 (Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz)

Memory

  • 2.3GHz
    8GB of 2133MHz DDR4 memory
    Configurable to 16GB

Storage1

  • 1TB (5400-rpm) hard drive
Configurable to 1TB Fusion Drive or 256GB SSD

Graphics

  • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640

Video Support and Camera

  • FaceTime HD camera
  • Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors (21.5-inch) or 1 billion colors (21.5-inch 4K) and:
    • One 5120‑by‑2880 (5K) external display at 60Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or
    • Two 3840-by-2160 (4K UHD) external displays at 60Hz with support for 1 billion colors, or
    • Two 4096‑by‑2304 (4K) external displays at 60Hz with support for millions of colors
  • Thunderbolt 3 digital video output
  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • Thunderbolt 2, HDMI, DVI, and VGA output supported using adapters (sold separately)

I have not configured the RAM up to 16 GB yet because my last iMac only had 8 GB and it was fine.  The iMac came with High Sierra installed as the OS.

I am using the most recent version of LR and PS.  I don't have any other significant programs on my computer.  I'd love to subscribe to all of the Adobe programs but I can only imagine the problems I would have.

Any and all help or guidance would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Did you try to reset the Preferencies? https://www.panosfx.com/installation-troubleshooting/reset-preferences

Do all other Applications run normaly? Maybe it's a Hardware/RAM issue.

PS: Sorry for your frustrations – but it's not always Adobe's fault 😉
