Photoshop : match colour of an image's background to the background of the first layer

Hi there,

I am a beginner here . I have an illustration 12*12 which is an object in a white background. Nevertheless, the background is not the same white along and across edges of the illustration. It is like a hundred different hues of white as it moves from the object outwards. 

 

I want to make this image 4*6 inches without stretching or losing the image in the center but also with having similar whiteness in the background. Is there any way for doing that ?

    Simplest approach would be to remove background from foreground element. Create a new background layer beneath your foreground layer.

     

    Depending on complexity of image, you could select all white regions with Magic Wand or Quick Mask. With background selected (marching ants), hit Backspace key to remove it.
