Photoshop memory leak issues in 25.4

I'm having huge memory issues with the most recent version of photoshop all of a sudden.

For example, if I create a small canvas, and start drawing with the brush tool, photoshop's memory issue rapidly increases, reaching it's maximum (around 17gb of ram) within 10 seconds. The more I use any tool, the more memory usage increases.

I've reverted to 24.7.2 and that has completely fixed the issue. I've also tried reinstalling photoshop, as well as updating my tablet drivers, and clearing out hard drive space and running a disk cleanup, none of which worked.

Is this a laptop with integrated GPU? In that case the GPU will use system RAM, and it can use a lot. So that may be part of it.

Not saying this is normal, it does sound a bit excessive, especially if earlier versions use less in the same situation. I'm not seeing anything similar here.

Nope, this is a desktop that I built myself. The graphics card is old but it's never had a problem before, and doesn't on other versions of photoshop.

Here's the task manager graph. The first incline on the memory graph is when I opened photoshop. The other inclines are when I was drawing with the brush tool. The plateau is when I stopped using the tool

It does seem like you're getting the same OpenCL failure that hits a lot of people now, and that's causing problems.

Which is a bit ironic, since the OpenCL APIs are being phased out, and Photoshop's entire graphics code migrated to DirectX. But there's still a small piece left.

In another thread I saw an engineer suggest disabling OpenCL altogether in Preferences. They are investigating this, but so far I haven't seen any conclusive resolution. The solution may be to eventually get rid of OpenCL altogether.

Now, there's nothing alarming in those graphs as they are posted here. High memory usage is normal for both Photoshop and Lightroom, and that goes for both system RAM and VRAM. The question is - does it keep going up if you keep brushing? That shouldn't happen. It should never max out completely, and PS memory usage should never go above the limit you have set in Preferences.

BTW - what is your memory allocation in Preferences? Don't go above 70%.

Also, try a new Nvidia driver. Use the Studio driver, not the Game Ready driver. Do a custom install and check "clean install" to remove all traces of the old driver. Uncheck all the extra components in the driver package, you don't need them. Just install the base driver.

Yep, if I keep using any tool it will very quickly reach mach. And my memory allocation is exactly 70%. I'll look into open CL tomorrow and see if that helps.

I have photoshop open but no docs open at all and it's consuming 12.71 GB.

Same here. Opened photoshop let it be open fow a while without opening any projects in it, and most of my RAM was gone.  I guess I either create a habbit of closing it every as often as possible or install my trusty CS6 ....

I've noticed this across multiple Adobe Products. I'm using a Mac Studio with an M1 Max chip. I have 64GB of RAM and I've noticed that if I leave Photoshop, Media Encoder, or Premiere open overnight the amount of memory in use will continue to increase. This morning Photoshop was using 32GB of memory. I can look at the last 24 hours and see the memory useage slowly increase. This seems to happen with and without open documents.

That's perfectly normal.

Raster image editing requires huge amounts of memory, much more than any RAM you may have installed. That's why you have a scratch disk to hold all of that data, with RAM acting as a fast access cache to the scratch disk's main memory.

The scratch file contains all history states for all open documents, plus some overhead for advanced functions like smart objects. Some of the new AI functions also eat up memory like crazy.

Photoshop will use memory up to the limit you have set in Preferences. This happens very quickly. Furthermore, that memory is reused and recycled as you work, it is not released until you quit the application. This is by design. Requesting memory from the operating system for every file would make e.g. batch processing very much slower.

An added complication here is that Apple silicon uses shared system memory. The GPU can eat up a lot of memory! The rule of thumb with shared system memory is that you need around double the amount you normally would.

I edited something on Saturday morning, forgot to close my Adobe apps. I think I checked my email a couple times on Monday. On Monday evening, I came back to this. Photoshop, having no documents open, and sitting unused for 2 days was using 36GB of memory. Premiere was trying to use 365GB of RAM. My computer only has 64 GB.

I think you're right, this is "normal" in the sense that all/most adobe prodcuts have memory leaks. But I don't think it's intended behavior... or, maybe it is. It's just annoying to me as an end user and feels like a bug.
