Photoshop on Windows Home screen images disappear when I click on them

Hello. I have the lastet version of Photoshop 2022 installed. I have the Home screen turned on and it appears like I've seen it in most videos/images online. Going through the home screen tutorials, if I would like to open a recent image that shows as a thumbnail on the home screen I should just simply click on the image to open it. When I do that, however, the thumbnail just disappears. I have several thumbnails on the home screen and about 50% of them just disappear when I click on them, while the other 50% will actually open in photoshop. There is no ryme or reason to the images that decide to open and the ones that decide to disappear. These are .psd, .jpg, and .png files.

Does anybody know what's going on?

Could you please share the version of Photoshop from Help > About Photoshop & the operating system you are working on?

Where are the files stored after you work on them? Are you saving the files on the internal drive or an external drive?

If the original/source document of the recent file is moved or if it is missing, the file preview goes away from Recents.

Please check if the original is stored where they were when you worked on the file last time.

Hi, Sameer. Thanks for the response. Photoshop version is 23.3.2

What you said makes sense. All of my files are stored on one of two internal drives. Some of them are on my desktop, in a folder. If a recent image is moved locally, it won't load in Photoshop from the recent images on the home page, is that correct? Searching the internet, I couldn't find any information on this. Could you point me in the direction in which I might find that info?

We are sorry for the delay. I can confirm that your understanding is correct.

Photoshop loses the link of the recent files if they are moved locally, and the thumbnails disappear when you try to open recent files that are missing.

Hi there, 

jumping in on this convo because I'm having the same problem. When I open Photoshop homescreen and try to click on a recent project it dissapears. And I'm saving them to Photoshop directly I think? And I'm not moving the file. 

When I work on a photo if I haven't finished with it I just save it to the cloud.

What is extension of image that dissapears? Can you post some screenshot? Which version of Photoshop is in question?

Have you tried Open > Open Cloud Documents?

Hi did you solve this issue? Because it just happened to me. I spent, literally, an entire day on an image, saved it in Photoshop, then opened the home page today and clicked on the image and it disappeared.

Perhaps try resetting Photoshop preferences?

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

Before you reset your preferences

in case of future issues, I suggest you make a copy as Adobe may need one to check problematic references. 

Quit Photoshop.
Go to Photoshop's Preferences folder

  Note for those on macOS: - be aware that the user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

  In the Finder, open the “Go” menu whilst holding down the Option (Alt) key.

  Library will now appear in the list - below the current user's “home” directory. ]

Now you can drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to the desktop or somewhere safe as a back-up of your settings.

Note for those on macOS:

Preference preservation is affected by macOS permissions,

you’ll need to allow Photoshop ‘Full Disk Access’ in your Mac OS Preferences/Security and Privacy

It may even be time to reinstall Photoshop.

It’s recommended that you use the Adobe CC cleaner tool to remove all traces first.

(See above about preserving preferences though! Its worth preserving them unless they are corrupted.)

Uninstall Photoshop BUT make sure to choose the option “Yes, remove app preference”.

Once that process finishes, start the installation process and look into the “Advanced Options”. Uncheck “Import previous settings and preferences” and choose to “Remove old versions”.
