photoshop scratch disk

New Here ,
Mar 08, 2023 Mar 08, 2023

Hi,

I'm having a problem setting up my new ssd external drive as a photoshop scratch disk on my mac. If anyone might be able to help it would be greatly appreciated.

I just purchased a new ssd and want to set it up as a scatch disk, but when I try to, photoshop doesn't seem to recognise it. It is ExFAT format. I read in a forum that it might need to be formatted for mac. If this is the case, could someone please explain how to do this.

Many thanks.

exFAT doesn't work well in newer MacOS versions. Reformat to APFS (note this will wipe everything on the drive).

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post if it helps you get responses.

Hi, thanks a lot this worked.

In case anyone else sees this and is unsure how to reformat, like I was, here is a great youtube video that explained how to do it for mac's devices :  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i4KLqjYoZA

No. APFS is Apple only. Windows needs NTFS.

The purpose of exFAT was to be cross-platform, but it was always said to be unreliable on either platform, and now MacOS has basically shut it down. It still works in Windows, but I have never used it.

FAT32 and exFAT are the only ones with native support on both Windows and Mac. There are limitations to both of those. FAT32 can't work with larger drives and exFAT doesn't have full support on the Mac side.

APFS and HFS Extended are Mac formats that require additional software on Windows to read or write.

NTFS is a Windows format that Mac can read but not write to.
