My son has spent hours on his media project. When trying to open his work the following message now appears:- "cannot complete request as unexpected end of file encountered" Can anyone help? We are not very technical ! Thanks Andrea
The file is corrupted. You wrote that you are working on a Mac. If you have Time Machine in and running, you may be able to recover an earlier version of your work.
If not, try to open the file in your Browser or other application. If that works, resave the file that appears. If not, your son may have had his first valuable lesson and begin again. In the future, he should save the file now and then while he is working on it, being sure to save it each time with a different name, such as: james_1,

Hi Jamesd,
We're sorry to hear about the unexpected end of file error, could you please let us which exact version of Photoshop you're working on and which operating system are you using?
Also, are the files saved locally or across a network?
Regards,
Sahil

Thank you - I guess he will have to start again! Is there a reason why this happened ?

Andrea, I am sure there are eggheads here who can tell you why this type of hiccup occurs -- some nonsense about circuitry and electrons, but don’t you believe it. The fact that this happens only with important files has convinced me that something far more sinister is at work. I suspect a group of gremlins – the same ones who make vending machines take your coins but don’t deliver the candy, the ones who suddenly kill your washing machine in the middle of the soapy-wash cycle, the ones who lead you to believe a puddle isn't as deep as it really is.
Chin up. In this case, I suggest that to ease James’ pain you buy him an external drive and activate Time Machine on the Mac.

Oh no! That's a corrupted file and can happen for a variety of reasons I'm sorry this happened to you.
Piggybacking on norman.sanders' comment... I have heard there are some PSD recovery utilities available, but you would need to do a web search as I have not used one myself.
As suggested, Time Machine might be able to save you, if you have it set up.
