Please help! Oil paint filter and Open CL both grayed out ...

I bought some actions back in the fall of 2019. One of them has an oil painting option that worked great for a few months. Early on in 2020 I opened photoshop, only to discover that all my actions had disappeared! I have gradually reloaded them, and recently tried using the oil paint actions and I get the message that "oil paint is not currently available". I've read suggestions to make sure "Open CL" is clicked in the advanced settings, but that is also grayed out. Can anybody help me figure out how to fix this so I can use my actions again? I would be ever so grateful!!

I have a newer computer that I bought in January of 2019 that was a "gaming" computer, so it should have plenty of power in my graphics card to handle these actions since it did before. Also, my CC is currently 20.2, so not sure if that is the problem.

"I...tried using the oil paint actions"

In addition to what Ged said, what happens when you try Oil Paint directly from the Filter menu and not from the action you purchased? What are the steps in the action?

It is grayed out, so I can't use it either way unfortunately.

    Thank you for your response!

    Hi

What GPU do you have in that system, have you tried updating the driver from the manufacturers website, is Photoshop detecting the GPU in preferences

Yes, it does show up the same as your screen shot. But when I go into Advanced settings, the Open CL is grayed out. I have watched a few videos and tried a number of options, but it always came down to reinstalling the driver - which is "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080" I believe. I ain't gonna lie, I'm not good at that type of thing so it kind of scares me! My husband always takes care of that of stuff, but at 4am he was peacefully sleeping while I sat here until 5am pulling my hair out.

I guess that's what I'm going to have to try next. Is there any chance it will mess up my photoshop or computer when I update or reinstall it? I don't have time to mess with any major glitches right now.

And thank you for responding! I appreciate it!

I have never had any issues with the operating system or Photoshop when updating/re-installing GPU drivers so you should be fine.

Take a look here, especially section 7 https://helpx.adobe.com/ie/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Download the Nvidia driver from here https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?

When your running the installer make sure to select "custom install" and then "perform a clean installation"

I moved your post over from the poorly named Community Help forum, which is for getting help using this forum system, to a better forum, Ps.

I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much! As you've noticed, I'm rather clueless in these parts 😉
