Poor quality AI results

I have to say that the results I get from generative fill in photoshop are absolutely terrible. Why is adobe including a poor quality function? Not only do the image results look unrealistic but the reults are in low resolution, so absolutely no use whatsoever to a print designer. Might be fun for someone trying out photoshop for personal use, but when I pay a lot of money for a professional application and it includes a function that is dreadful then there is big problem in my opinion. Can adobe either make functions that work to a high standard or drop the monthy subscription price to reflect how poor AI is.

I understand your concern. Generative Fill in Adobe Photoshop is positioned as an AI-assisted feature, not a final production solution. The lower resolution and occasional unrealistic outputs reflect current limitations of generative models, particularly for high-resolution print work.

In professional workflows, for example, when preparing polished visuals for a law firm website or other client-facing platforms, the AI output often works best as a starting point. Most designers refine, retouch, and upscale the result before publishing or sending it to print.

If the results are consistently below professional standards, I would recommend sharing specific file settings, resolution details, and sample outputs in the forum. Concrete examples tend to get more actionable responses from Adobe staff and experienced users.

It is now 2026 and it’s like the AI in Photoshop is the village idiot.  I have an image where I’ve added canvas to the left and right and I just want the existing background to be extended.  I say “Continue the wall lamp and curtain from the right side of the selection and continue the wood texture background”
It gives me something passable.  I select the empty canvas on the right and tell it “continue the wood texture background” and I get completely different wood textures - like log cabin and tree rings.  Then I get irritated and just copy the wall texture it already made and drop it into the area...flatten the image and select the new part saying “adjust the lighting on this section of the background” and the thing literally adds a lamp, a recessed light, and random electrical cables…..Hey Adobe...get with OpenAI and use ChatGPT for your internal AI source instead of trying to create your own.  The one you are using now is so bad it’s embarrassing.

Hi @JackPoe72,

I understand the frustration, especially when you’re asking for something simple like extending an existing texture, and it generates unrelated elements.

A couple of workflow adjustments usually improve consistency significantly:

• Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool and include a small overlapping area of the original image along with the empty canvas. Don’t select only the blank area.

• Make sure the actual image layer is selected, not an empty layer, before running Generative Fill.

• Extend one side at a time, left first, then right.

• In the Generative Fill prompt bar, try typing just a period ( . ) and press Enter. This tells Photoshop to extend contextually without forcing interpretation.

• Choose the best of the 3 generated variations.

When you explicitly describe objects (such as a lamp, a curtain, or lighting), the model may reinterpret the scene rather than seamlessly extend the texture. Add items later, once the background is set and extended properly, matching the original image.

If you’re still not getting the desired result:

• Please share the original image and the generated result via DM

• I’ll review it and guide you step-by-step on how to get a more natural extension

Sometimes minor selection adjustments make a big difference.

7/2025 here, AI in Ps still feels like a meme 😉 Unfortunately, Adobe was super late to the AI party back then and still lags behind almost everyone else (incl. self-created applications you can find on GitHub created by smart coders that work way better). Personally, I don't use it and prefer the good ol' classics like Dall-E or Midjourney.

You wrote this a year ago and it's still as bad as it ever was. I just don't get it! So disappointing!

Hey @MCags, sorry the feature hasn't worked out as expected. Could you go a bit more in-depth about the issues you're having with Photoshop's Generative AI?

Here are a few tips that might help improve image quality:

  • Use the Latest Model: Make sure you’re using the Adobe Firefly Image 3 Model for better quality and prompt comprehension.

  • Refine Your Prompts: Be as detailed as possible with your prompts to guide the AI effectively.

  • Utilize Reference Images: Upload a reference image to get content that matches your expectations more closely: https://adobe.ly/3VulHuA

  • Experiment with Variations: Use the Generate Similar feature to find a version that meets your standards.

  • Check Your Selections: Ensure your selections are precise. Tools like the Lasso or Rectangular marquee can help.

  • Update Photoshop: Keep Photoshop updated to benefit from the latest improvements to AI features and performance.

Hope this helps! Tag me with an @ when you respond so I can follow up. Thanks!

Alek

Don't know if they will, but I'm happy to.

To be perfectly blunt, it doesn't follow prompts. It may follow parts of a prompt at its discretion, but it never comes out as written. Thinking this might be possible user error, I fed the same prompts into various other generative models, all but two of which produced exactly what I wrote. (They weren't stellar, to be clear. But they WERE what I asked for.)

To be super clear, AI in Photoshop is possibly the worst software experience one could have. It is shameful that it is let out, a clear sign of greed to let people think something exists.

Victor, you need to be specific.  Photoshop has used Ai in multiple ways for some years now with the various Sensei enhanced functions.   I agree that Generative Fill can be challenging to use, but the much improved selection and cleanup tools are sensationally good.  We can work much faster than we could ten years ago, and so more accurately with much better results.
