Print Settings Missing Media Paper Types (resulting in poor prints)

Hi there,

I'm having this issue on both Photoshop 2024 v.25.12.0 and Photoshop 2025 v.26.1.0

See attached image. Previously in the Print Settings dialogue, there was an option for media type that had multiple paper type options (e.g. fine art dense, matte photo paper, platinum, etc.). And now there's only the options for paper type to select auto select, photo, or plain paper. I still have my ICC profiles. So I can select Photoshop Manages Colors and then select my profile. But because I can't select the media type specifically the prints are coming out all wrong. Is this a horrible managed PS update? Or is something wrong with my set up?

What I've tried so far:

Updated to the most current versions of PS

Deleted the printer (Canon Pro-1000) as well as all the files under /library

Checked that I am on the latest printer firmware (it is current)

Updated/reinstalled the printer driver

Reinstalled the printer

I've been struggling with a strong magenta cast on my printed images (these are images that I print regularly and am using the same file that worked before). I contacted Canon thinking it was a printer issue, but we ruled that out. When I printed through their Print Studio Pro program there was no color cast or any other issues. So this is a PS specific issue. And I believe it's because there's no option to select the proper media type. I've even tried selecting auto select and printing on Canon photo paper. Every single print is color cast.

Pleeeaaaase tell me there's a fix and this isn't just a garbage PS update that makes it unusable for printing. 😞

That looks like a generic MacOS printer driver and not the Canon driver.

(I don't do Mac, so someone else will have to provide the details).

Thanks for the reply! I think you're right about that. How do I make sure the Canon driver gets installed in PS? I've looked around and all I can find is stuff saying it should be automatically installed along with driver installation.

You need to look up the driver on Canon's website and download it.

@alyce003, have a look at this info please, it was written for Epson but will apply to Canon too:

Epson / Mac: Add printer, AirPrint issue, here are some notes about Apple’s built in Gimp Print / Gutenprint based printer driver.

Best avoided.  It can print quite differently from the manufacturer's own driver software. 

Does the print driver look different? some options have changed?

Are media names the same as previous drivers you've used, e.g.. is 'Premium Luster Photo Paper' mentioned or are the media types just simplified names like matte or gloss? 

You'll be aware, I'm sure, that the selected media name in the driver must match the selection made when printing ICC profiling patches, (so the ICC profile and media type selection are linked) . BUT is the media name selected previously actually there in the list?

IF the media names listed differ (and have been simplified) then you are perhaps inadvertently using Apple’s default Gimp/ Gutenprint driver rather than Epson’s own. It's not just a matter of installing Epson driver software, you have to select it too. I do know it's very important to use Epson's own driver software. I tripped over this myself on a client site, the driver looked different and I put it down to an OSX update imposed style - took a while to work that one out.

Here's an example of what I'd expect to see in an Epson driver for media name options:

Can you access print settings in an application other than Photoshop, try Preview?

If not, a thorough purge may be in order, perhaps install drivers (downloaded from Epson) again: 

1. Delete all instances of Epson printers from 

System Settings (or System Preferences depending on Mac OS version) / Printers & Scanners -or- System Preferences>Print & Fax, whichever you have.

2. Then go to /Library/Printers and trash the whole Epson folder.

3. Delete the Epson LFP Remote Panel (IF you are using that utility).

4. Then go to Epson online and download the printer drivers yourself.

Do not let the Mac install the printer driver for you.

There’s one more tripwire - in System Settings (or System Preferences depending on Mac OS version) / Printers  - - - , when adding the connected printer

[i.e. click the padlock, enter your password and click the “+” button]

 

- watch out for the “Use" selection - I recommend you do not select "Airprint" there under "use", but, rather, manually set "use” to the printer name, which will then call on the manufacturer’s own software rather than the default Apple driver (that’s based on Gimp Print / Gutenprint, which misses out some printing options such as specific manufacturers media names).

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! That finally fixed it!!! I seriously tried everything - deleted everything, downloaded the driver, and reinstalled it multiple times. So weird to have this issue, but glad it's resolved now. 🙂

Neil, I'm having the same issue with my Canon printer - the same printer as the original poster (Image Prograf Pro-1000) and still can't seem to get it resolved.  I downloaded the new printer driver from Canon, deleted the printer and reinstalled it.  The Name and Use lines say the exact same thing (Canon PRO-1000 Series).  Not sure what else to do.  The ICC profiles list is still showing up same as before, and I can see the MOAB Entrada paper I'd like to choose, but that whole drop down is grayed out, unless I choose Photoshop manages color.  I'd be so grateful for any help!!

@dawnsing you must select photoshop manages color to access those profiles.

@NB, colourmanagement Sorry, I should have tagged you in my previous post!  I didn't delete a Canon folder, but if I deleted the printer and reinstalled, and uploaded the latest driver, do I still need to do that?  

Your instructions on #4 said not to let MAC istall the printer driver for you.  Not sure what you mean.  I downloaded the current printer driver from the list of options on Canon's website (that had a similar name/number to the previous one that worked).

@dawnsing if you downloaded the driver from Canon and did not select use:AirPrint you should be ok. Are you not?

@NB, colourmanagement So, I just uninstalled and reinstalled the printer again, so I could screenshot.  (Sorry they're so huge!)  The first one shows what it looks like when I select the Canon printer.  It just shows the name.  After reinstalling, when I click on the printer details, it has added airprint to the name.  But our printer is in the next room over from my computer, so it's always said Airprint.

@dawnsing your upper screenshot looks just right

but unfortunately using Apples AirPrint generally  bypasses the manufacturers (Canon in your case) driver software. You'll have to talk to Canon about accessing a remote printer via their driver software if you want to see actual canon menus manes in the printer options. 
if you CAN see actual Canon media names listed under "Media" in printer options you're fine.

Briefly, all of you understand the digital world better than I. I simply stumbled across something that might help save time and frustration. After you have deleted your printer info (above) and added the new driver, when you try to add a new printer, wait a few seconds. Don't add a Bonjour printer but wait for the (IP) one. That, anyway, finally worked for me. I realize the much more sophisticated users would already have thought of that, but for us less sophisticated, that might save a world of aggravation. I hope that helps.

@Christopher Kleihege That probably succeeds because you then likely don't get offered "Airprint" under "use"

so many times, that's what causes these issues. I wouldn’t expect  a USB-connected printer to show up under IP (that’s normally for Ethernet cable printer connections)
