Why am I receiving the error "Could not complete your request because of an problem parsing the JPEG data" when I try to open photo files in Elements editor (7.0)? I was able to open these files in Photoshop a few weeks ago and now I get an error. This is occurring for many of my files. How do I correct this? Please help me!
I have found a solution, however, only for MAC users:
Step 1: Download the image to your "downloads" folder.
Step 2: Open your "Photos" program on your MAC. (I currently run OS El Capitan)
Step 3: Go into your "File" menu, and scroll down to "Import"
Step 4: When the window opens, go to your "Downloads" folder that you saved your photo in. Click on the name of your photo.
Step 5: After your photo opens, go back to the "File" menu, but this time click "Export". It will have an arrow that go
...Found a very quick method to sort for windows users. Open the file that doesnt work in the standard windows picture viewer, rotate the image, close, rotate back and close again. Will work fine.

well well well. the first time, using the Windows rotate trick worked for me. Now it's not working. I'm just lost... These files aren't any newer, in fact they are from the same bunch as before. I mass rotated them and back. didn't work. I rotated one and back. didn't work. I even rotated it just once, to see if maybe Windows is simply undoing the rotate when I go CCW after CW... still didn't work... at least on the one image that I'm trying. So this isn't a very solid solution then.
just lost. I don't want to save the file in another format. that's ridiculous, even if saving to lossless TIF, it's still ridiculous... when it's "clearly" (?) the header data... something is wonky anyway. It's within the the technical requirements of JPEG, but something is non-standard. Opening as RAW is also a terrible workaround because it majorly interrupts the workflow, and can't easily be batched.

I'm having the same problem. Just received a Camera Raw update so I tried opening a JPG in that, and it works. An extra step to be sure but that's my workaround. I don't want to mess with my registry but want to be able to use Elements.
Open your pic in Camera Raw and immediately click the "Open" button, unless you want to process the picture there.
Hope that helps you.

Nope that is not the best thing to do, that's only for MAC anyway but the majority of here uses Windows of course. So for both Windows and Mac users, the best thing to do without loosing the quality and going through that hassle, just open the image (view), right click and and click copy. Then, go to Photoshop Create New File ( Ctrl + N) and if you want the exact picture size, just click ok or use your desired size, and then paste. There you go.

elegant, quick, easy, lossless (except for EXIF data, if you want that)... great solution

Right this is NOT ANSWERED and still persists YEARS later.
I can NOT open these files with Photoshop. PERIOD.
All the other product solutions like using Paint and etc just proves how STUPID this is yhou have one of the most expensive JPEG and graphic editing programs in the world I have paid THOUSANDS for over the year with new released and etc etc. and I have Premiere and Lightroom and etc.
And the thing can't parse or edit things created by multiple other programs that other LESSOR programs like MS Paint can open and save with not problem?????
the Adobe solution is tough crap and just buy our monthly subscription lifetime SAS product.......

that is correct - NOT ANSWERED and NOT SOLVED. the only solution will be more $$ and abandon the free stadning software from Adobe and subscription where ALL you problems will be fixed <smile> NOT.
But that is their story and an $$$ story it is. They will never fix THEIR mistake and sloppy programming because these are now deemed unsupported products and they GOT your money already. (and mine)

Im beginning to think its MAC OS. My wedding photos showed as corrupt in Sierra but I had no problem with them at ome on MAC OS 9.7.1. Ive never had this problem in platinum. even Facebook Jpgs. The "review thumbnail" data gets screwed up and Im beginning to think its the operating software. Im no expert thogh i could be wrong.

this is a WORKAROUND, a bandaid, an extra step. ITs a very basic and fundamental operation for a photo editing software product to edit photos and graphics from what is now the place that generates the most photos and graphics in the world - Facebook and/or Instagram?
drunken, feeble, lousy programming by Adobe. Must have hired Microsoft or Apple rejects (that bar isn't that high either) 😉

for Windows 10 I found that I can open pictures from Iphones sent by text Androids sent by text then emailed to pc open fine. iPhone pics from Messenger open ok Android pics from Messenger when saved to my pc save with the word received as the first word in the name of the file and these won't open. I get the parsing message. To open the Androids from Messenger I got to Edit >Preferences >File Handling >Camera Raw Preferences >JPG and TIFF handling >select each one and choose option that starts "Automatically Open All Supported XXXXXX Images" Picture opens in Camera Raw select open image then save and it will work find after that. It isn't ideal but I make the change when I have a bunch of Android pics do them all at once then change the settings back to normal. I don't know enough about registry to dare making any changes so I am sticking with this until I need to take my computer to the local tech to add a new spare hard drive.

Found a fix for mine. I’m your image file, right click on the image file click on Properties, at the very bottom you will see SECURITY: this file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer. Check the “unblock” box. Select Apply then Ok. file now will open in PS CC.

This problem is now many years old and Adobe still hasn't fixed it. I am constantly having to open .jpg images in other software that has no problem opening them and resaving them as .jpg images. Almost every day. I have given up on Adobe ever fixing anything we complain about. I have had the same couple Fill and Sign issues with Adobe Reader many complain about for years too and Adobe has never bothered to fix them either. Adobe, do you have a policy against fixing legitimate problems we repeatedly report to you for many years????

There is no issue with the file as programs like simple and free PAINT and web browsers and EVERY thing else opens the file just fine!!!! This is a 100% ADOBE unique and specific problem.
