PS CC 21.02 - Effects applied to entire canvas, but clipped to artboard - Bug/"Feature"?

Hello,

As a long time Illy user I am transitioning certain workflows over to PS to try and cut down on having to use multiple programs.

Yesterday I discovered artboards within Photoshop by complete accident and I don't know if I am expecting behaviour based on how Illy handles artboards, or this is just how PS does it. But it seems counterintuitive to me.

I have created 3 artboards that are going to be variants on a theme, so I will be re-using the same content across all three and adjusting the elements to fit each layout.

As part of the process I was going to apply certain effects to the layers, for instance the camera raw filter vignette.

Instead of the effects being applied to the layer or the artboard boundaries, it's instead applied to what I can only assume is the canvas, and that includes all the artboards, plus the space between them (and a bit more).

So instead of the vignette being applied to just the layer (or artboard space), it's being applied across the entire canvas space, but then clipped to the artboard in question. See the image as an illustration of the problem.

Any ideas if I am doing it wrong, missing something fundamental, or if it's a bug or "working as intended"?

Photoshop isn't a "multiple page" app, there is only one canvas. Artboards are a special type of layer group that are like a "window" or "mask" to "isolate" a part of the overall canvas in order to provide the semblance of multiple pages or multiple canvas areas.

There are limitations with this approach which may require creative workarounds.

I have been facing the same issue past many days, I want to merge layers of a particular artboard and apply "camera raw filter" to only that merged layer.
But when I try to apply the vignette to that merged layer, it is only applied to one particular corner of the layer as it selects the entire area even if I hide the other artboards.

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

You could try a Smart-Object-in-Smart-Object approach and apply the Filter to the Smart Object inside the Smart Object.

I hope this screenshot might help you to understand my problem better.

Could you please post meaningful screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

Sure. Here you go.

I have 10 artborts in current project. I added 1 new layer in 1 Artboard. Some brush strokes to help it visualise it better.

After I run Zoom Blur, it applies filter from the centre of all the Artboards? At least it looks like it to me?

Just to claryfy - I want Radial/Zoom Blur to be applied to layer directly in the Current Selected Artboard Space (if there is such term?).

For example, if I have only 1 canvaas, Blur looks like this:

I have the same problem and no idea if this is "feature" or a bug.

I have 3 x 1920x1080 pixels Artboards and when I try to apply effect to one of the layers to style it, it applies it accross all the Artboards e.g. Zoom Blur. It treats all the artboards like one big layer?

I'm not sure if this is for only some of the effects?
