I can see feint colours when I zoom right in.  This is >9000%.

You are  in RGB mode, so  there's no reason  why the colours would not be introduced.

What actions cause the colours to appear?

Capture your entire screen with the layers panel open so we can see what is happening. Also capture your brush options panel.

viktork28545546  We can't actually see any colours in your screenshot.  Your foreground and background colours are black and white, and that's what we can see on your canvas.

I suspect that English is not your first language, which might be presenting a problem, so perhaps if you state your question in your own language, and we'll see if  the forum translate tool makes sense of it.  Give as complete and explanation as you can, to give us the best chance of working it out.

At the top, go to Image and choose Mode from the dropdown menu. It will tell you if the image is in Grayscale, RGB, CMYK, etc. I thought it might be set to grayscale.

Convert the file to grayscale and the color will go away. When you work in RGB there is three channels of information. If one channel is slightly different then the other two, you will get color. I would expect this to happen when using the smudge tool. The blur tool probably does the same thing. A grayscale document only has one channel, so there is no way to end up with color.
