Rasterising Smart Objects in Photoshop 2020

Hey,

Up until now, whenever I tried to edit a smart object directly I'd get a message that a smart object can't be edited and Photoshop would offer to rasterise the smart object. I could simply hit Enter and I was ready to edit the newly rasterized layer. Now I have to right click the smart object and choose rasterize, which is a lot slower for me. Is there a way to turn on the legacy option?

Hello, I have a question about your workflow: why do you need to edit the SOs. You do realize that you immediately lose all the benefits of using them. And in corollary, do you need those items to be Smart Objects? There is maybe a way to import them in another form, if you explain your workflow...

Lets say I need to create a quick post for social media. I have my square template in Photoshop > I drag and drop the image I need to use in Photoshop > the image is imported as a smart object > I resize it to fit the subject in my template > I need to add a bit of background on the sides, because after the resize the image dosn't fill the template > I can't use the content-aware fill on a smart object.

Do you need to import the images as Smart Objects, if not there's an option in Preferences to disable that

I'd rather import my images as Smart Objects and rasterize them when I need to, rather than the other way around, but might be a good option to consider. Thanks.

Smart Object layers can be edited. But Editing them you should not change its size for the smart object layer transform will not be changed so if you change the smart object size the Smart Object Layer associated Layer transform will not work correctly.  There is no bug IMO.

Why would you need to rasterize the smart object layer there way to fill the area with content without rasterizing the image. The content does not have to be in the smart object layer. You can also add a layer mask to the smart object layer that mask the layer to the Template Square image area. The mask added would mot be linked toe the smart object layer content.  So you can  Transform the smart image layer  image to fill the square area the mask will confine what is visible to that square area.   That is how my scripts populated Photo Collage templates.  Templates can even be batched populated with a Photoshop script.  Normally I could post a video but this site seems to have stopped Youtube videos. I post a screen captures of a  template. The template after being automatically populated by a script the the populated  template with the layer mask disabled.  The image populated have various Aspect Ratios.

I'm sorry, JJMack, but unfortunately I could not really understand what you are trying to explain. However, from what I gather you are explayning something that dosn't solve my problem. Here is what I'm trying to do in one picture: I want to use Content-Aware Fill without having to right click the smart object and rasterize it. I did not have that problem in Photoshop 2019.

Adobe has a history of changing Photoshop operation that requie user to change their work-flow. It Adobe Software.

Adobe should have a history of improving my workflow, not slowing it down. The whole point of the subscription business model is that we receive an ongoing support from Adobe. There is no reason for the particular change, we are discussing here, to take place, so I hope Adobe will address the issue.
